Buying and Insuring a Moto as a tourist?

From what I have read, it seems to be a bit of a pain to do this. I have a friend in Rhode Island that has offered to "buy and insure" a moto, and after I've ridden the bike west to Vancouver, B.C., he will "sell it to me" so that I can go through the process of registering it in Canada. Any thoughts? Downsides?

On a side note, any predictions for weather and road conditions in April for the East? I hope the snow will be gone by then!

No one has any input? Never heard of this? I'm not really that concerned with taxation, politics or other such things. I'm more curious of others experiences, suggestion, or general information involved with registering as a tourist. I have got the insurance side covered.
