Suggestions for camping in the Florida Keys.

I've always wanted to ride to Key west and get a pic at the southern most point of the USA. Does anyone have any suggestions for nice places to camp in the Keys? Trying to keep it relatively cheap and I'd prefer more of a natural setting as opposed to busy RV parks. Water or beach front campsites would be ideal. I'm looking to spend about two nights just sitting around and relaxing.

Not on Key West proper. Bahia Honda State Park http://www.floridastateparks.org/bahiahonda/default.cfm. I've not stayed there, but have ridden past and thru.

Took me a minute, but rates are $36/night. That's cheap for KW.

Can't go wrong with a KOA.

There are very few options to camp, much less motorcycle friendly. I know of one other called Leo's right in KW. It's also been 6 years since I've been that far south. Pack your sand stakes for the tent.

$49/night.

For the record, I'm military retired, so I camp at KW NAS for $10/night. ;)

When are you planning on being there?

Most of the suggestions are RV spots, and once you get there you find out that $39 a night really means $99 a night.

Honda park is one of the only national parks there.

There is a little cantena just over one of the bridges (yea, exact I know) that you can see from the bridge, you have to make two rights once you're on land to get to it. But a little further S from it and the beach is fairly secluded, I camped there for a couple nights and no one bothered me. The guy who owned the Cantena brought me coffee in the morning and gave me some free beers and a burger for lunch.

Also, if you have cooking gear, stop by one of the roadside fish places, grab yourself some fish or crab and make yourself a gourmet meal for a fraction of what some of the seafood places down there charge.

Conch fritters are good, even though I have no idea what a conch is....

I should be in the neighborhood in the next couple weeks...

Lower Keys Camping

There is no camping in Key West city limits. The nearest is Boyds on Stock Island, Mile Marker 5 (MM 0 is downtown Key West in front of the court house. MM 4 is the bridge out of Key West to Stock Island for reference).
Sugarloaf KOA MM20 has a few decent tent sites in an RV Park under trees and so forth but this time of year anywhere tends to be crowded. Bahia Honda State Park tends to have long waiting lists for the winter.

Your best bet for waterfront rustic camping might be Big Pine Fishing Lodge at MM 31 on the south side of Highway One as you enter the Key Deer zone from the north.

It should take an hour to get to Key West from here.

I've camped at Boyds Campground, clean nice place and only about 5miles from downtown. Also camped at the KOA but its a half hour from downtown. Both coast about the same, so when I go back i'll return to Boyds. http://www.boydscampground.com/

+1 on Bahia Honda....get a campsite on the water, it's incredible. Done it numerous times for bug season.

Anything you could need while camping is just across Seven Mile Bridge in Marathon...food, booze...boobs...

Knight's Key Campground is good and not super crowded right now. They allow 2 tents per site due to county regs. The Sunset Grille at the end of the road is a good place for a beer or two at the end of the day.

The KOA is nice but pretty full of RVs and is expensive. Depending on when you go there might be a bunch of spring breakers camping there.

Bahia usually requires a reservation made about a year in advance, but you might get lucky.

RVs are the norm at most places.

I'll be at Knight's Key Campground for 8 days soon with a group of friends.

Have fun, it's a beautiful time of year to camp in the Keys.

I just made reservations for the 17th & 18th at Bahia Honda (waterfront site). I wanted to head down sooner but that was the first opening for a water front site at BH. In fact, my bike is fully loaded right now; just need an excuse to hit the road. Was thinking of heading to Daytona but funds are somewhat limited right now.
