A journey into southern India

Just back from 12 day vacation towards Southern India so here is the trip summary...

Pictures: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?...1&l=a3339ff7d2

Day : 1
Route : Thane - Kolhapur - Chitradurga
Distance : 800 KMs
Condition : Widening work in progress between Pune-Satara.

Day : 2
Route : Chitradurga - Bangalore
Distance : 200 KMs
Condition : Some rough surface near Tumkur

Day : 3
Route : Bangalore - NICE Road - Mandya - Srirangpatna - Mysore - Gundlupet - Bandipur National Park - Masinagudi - Ooty
Distance : 285 KMs
Condition : Good roads, moderate traffic and lots of speed brakers till Mysore. Rough surface after Mysore a bit. Excellent roads after Bandipur park, very scenic and full of hairpin bends. In case you are taking this route from Ooty to Masinagudi, at times police divert vehicles via gudlur to keep traffic one way in the ghat.

Day : 4
Route : Ooty sightseeing

Day : 5
Route : Ooty - Annur - Palladam - Dharapuram - Palani - Kodaikanal
Distance : 250 KMs
Condition : Excellent roads but slower average speed due to ghats

Day : 6
Route : Kodai sightseeing - berijam lake and other points en route (via cab hire)

Day : 7
Route : Kodaikanal - Periyakulam - Theni - Bodinayakanur - Muthuvankudi - Devikulam - Munnar
Distance :
Condition : Excellent roads till Kerala border. Narrower roads with bad surface till devikulam. Great surface but narrow roads afterwards. Took a shorter route to reach Munnar via Muthuvankudi as shown by locals.

Day : 8
Route : Munnar - Top station - Munnar
Distance : 70 KMs
Condition : Excellent ghats and super tarmac, heaven for corner carving enthusiasts. Top station viewpoint is must see. On the way you can drive to Kundala dam waters too.

Day : 9
Route : Munnar - Adimali - Kothamangalam - Perumbavoor - Potta - Moonnupeedika - Guruvayoor - Edappal - Valanchery (bypass) - Pottammal - Kozhikode
Distance : 280 KMs
Condition : Good roads till Perumbavoor. After entering NH-17, the road passes through towns, rather towns never end. Poor average speeds and heavy traffic. Advised to take Thrissur route as recommended by HVK.

Day : 10
Route : Kozhikode - Mahe - Thalassery - Kuthuparamba - Mattannur - Iritty - Virajpet - Periyapatna - Bylakuppe
Distance : 200 Kms
Condition : NH-17 again poor till Thalassery. Speed guns between Kozhikode and Mahe. Bad roads between Thalassery and Kuthuparamba. Great roads onwards. Go via Virajipet-Coorg-Bylakuppe as the 10 KM forest road before periyapatna is almost non-existent.j

Day : 11
Route : Bylakuppe - Periyapatna - Hunsur - Mysore - Srirangapatna - Pandavapura - Melukote - Nagamangala - Turuvekere - Hulliyar - Hiriyur - Chitradurga
Distance : 330 KMs
Condition : Good roads overall with minor bad patches. Follow street signs as mentioned above (asking people for belluru also helps but couldnt see any street signs for that). Apart from these signs, you would see milestones for Bellary (which is not on the way)

Day : 12
Route : Chitradurga - Kolhapur - Thane
Distance : 800 KMs

Thank you for sharing. I have been to India twice, but not yet with a bike.

Awesome country to visit!
