Advice please....Auckland North-South Bypass ?

Planning a Northland loop starting in the Hamilton area... the Auckland "roadblock" will have to be navigated.
Doing that on fully loaded posties, the thought of crawling along the SH1 gives me the prickles.

Being out-of-towners, there IS however a certain curiosity to see something of the place...in passing only, though...so I'm looking for some way/ route to get us through or around Auckland...TWICE.

If at all possible, bypassing all and any main roads, but happy to spend some extra time to get through the green fringes/ lookouts/ scenic parts etc.

Happy to consider any alternatives, from ferries/ water-transport across the Manukau Harbour Mouth (if something like that exists)....same for the eastern side from Beachlands or Bucklands to the CBD, then with another "ferry" to Gulf Harbour or such...again, IF that option actually exists.
Any particular areas near Auckland one shouldn't miss? (scenic/ lookouts/ National Parks/ coastal strips or harbours type)

Thanks for any help and ideas.

PS. Dirt roads/ half-decent tracks/ beach etc. are fine

Head west - from Onehunga along Hillsborough Rd to Blockhouse Bay, then New Lynn, Glen Eden and onto H16. Hard to avoid the motoway coming from the south, unless you come up the Gt Sth Rd.

Thanks a bunch...that's sort of what I'd been playing with.
Really want to avoid the motorway, if at all possible.

This here looks like a possible way, just on 300k's and a bucketload of turn-offs to keep me on my toes. Enough for a day on a postie, I guess.
Don't have to rush, got 2 weeks.

Yeah, that looks good - pretty well my route to Auckland from Huntly. Howick to Blockhouse Bay will be the worst part. Scenic Drive will be fun on a Postie.

There are more corners on the Scenic Drive than the whole of Australia. Actually a rougher version of the Dandenongs.

Timing is going to be you friend with this one.
Fortunately for me I live as far away on the same Island as I can from Auckland. Unfortunately for me I often have to work their.
When I do drive to Auckland I will either leave home at 4-5am to arrive on the Auckland road network before 2:30pm or leave home at midday to arrive at 8pm.
For the trip home I try and leave at 5:30am at the latest or early afternoon.
Best of luck with the trip.

I'm in Onehunga, What Motu said, the guys in the sticks don't know what traffic is.
The Scenic Drive is really a 70 km max road, oddly some sections are posted 100 kmph...watch out for cyclists and joggers.
Come up the West side of the Waikato, up HW 22, then up the Gt South Road, takes you all the way to Penrose, then stop at my place for a cuppa then on your way.

All right, will keep that in mind. Going north should be a Sunday, not too bad then...coming back south will be different.

Home being Melbourne, we certainly know what traffic is...the reason to check how much of that PITA we can possibly avoid.
70kmh is sort-of top-whack on a loaded postie...most speed-restrictions won't concern us.
Might take you up on that coffee, though

Hey....might see you in March then. Looks like the AT bunch is slobbering for another SI ride, the last 2 were simply spectacular and word's gotten around.
What an awesome place NZ is!!
