Fluoro vest in USA and Canada?

Does anyone know if wearing a fluoro vest is mandatory whilst riding in any USA state or Canada ?

Regards,
Mark.

As far as I know, it is only mandatory in the US, while on a military installation. You have to have a specific training course as well.

Excuse my laughter, but not only is it not mandatory, you don't even have to wear a shirt at all. Ride around topless. Shorts, flip flops. Nobody cares. Some states do require a helmet and others do not.

You're going to be astonished at the things people wear (or do not wear) on a bike here.

Canada? I dunno. They're kinda different up there.

Jamie

Not mandatory, but a good idea.

I believe they are not needed in all of Canada as well.

Riden in all provinces from Quebec west - passed many a cop - without one.

I know for sure not needed in Ontario and have seen many riders - like 99%+ of the rest of Canada not wearing one.

Really? To access part of Los Padres National Forest, you have to cross a military base (or at least a low security part of it). I wonder if that is the case in that situation. I really doubt it.

I'll do you one better: If you are going to ride on an active airport runway, you will need the vest and a flag with a specific orange and white fluoro pattern on it.

Although it won't affect the OP's travels, I see that the DoD relaxed the requirement for hi-vis and reflective vests on installations.

They seem to now concentrate more on the quality of PPE. DoD Instruction 6055.04 now says:

Riders are encouraged to select PPE that incorporates fluorescent colors and retro-reflective material.

News to me, but good to know as I travel around occasionally visiting installations for lodging or other services.

Looks like service members are still required by some commands to wear hi-vis on or off post.

Hi visibility vests etc are not mandated in Canada for riding
on public roads.
You will see a number of riders wearing things like that
apparently in the belief that they will be safer .... and you
will also see members of that same neon- vest brigade ignoring
stop signs and other common sense traffic rules .Maybe they think they are safe because of the bright colour. Go figure.

Thanks folks, I don't have to pack the vest. I sure am looking forward to my 1st visit in the USA, starting next Tuesday. Jacksonville to Los Angeles over 5 weeks, I'm in for a real education I'm sure.

Regards,
Mark.
