Watsonian Oxford ?'s

I'm looking for some measurements on the Oxford. Any idea where I can get length (is it at least 6' inside?) weight etc?

Ever since I got reading the thread about the OP making his hack into some kind of camper setup I got this idea that one could take the Oxford and remove the seats, maybe build a subfloor for some storage and have a mattress on the top of it and sleep right inside.

It's got a weather tight, bug proof cover and nice windows all around. Put some reading lights in it and voila, home away from home

I've never seen one but there's one for sale up here that has been listed for a long time.

I drove a hack for 10 minutes back in the 70's but that's it and the bug has never gone away. When I used to faithfully attend MOA rallies back in the 80's and 90's I always came home to find all my pics were of sidecar rigs. My riding fast days are behind me (tickets sure kill the insurance premiums these days)

Any and all thoughts appreciated

I thought this was a sharp looking unit.

We are a dealer for this sidecar. Never been asked this before so I do not have the answer. I do know that the front seat is bonded into the sidecar and stiffens it up. I have seen one where they cut this out and made it into a single seat sidecar with one automotvie seat in it. I owned an Oxford for a while on a GL1500 but as that was in the early 1990's I do not remember much about it.
Watsonian no longer makes this sidecar. They say that the moulds were destriod so getting information out of Watsonian may prove problematic.

I'll take a tape measure to mine later. However, the seat is a fibreglass panel extending between the sides of the tub and it might make the tub a bit too wobbly if you cut it out. Think the length and width would be OK though.

Hmmm, that panel changes things a bit, wonder if adding a brace running near the top across and joining the sides would equal the same rigidity?

Is the car a lot heavier than most regular sidecars? Would an 11GS be OK for dragging it around or is it better suited for the GL1500 type HP #'s??

Hey Steve, while you're out there can you take a pic or two of that seat for me, really appreciate it??

Jay, the Palma looks kind of like a narrower version of the Oxford, any idea of what they weigh?

The GS would haul it, but I think you would find a narrower sidecar to work better for you. We had an Oxford come into the shop that was installed by a shop in California on a 650 Suzuki. The shop had not bothered to hook up the brake. The owner found it not safe to ride, parked it, about 10 years later some one spoted it sitting in his yard and purchased it. We did not even try and get the bike started, we moved the the sidecar to a 1300cc Kawasaki for a family with a lot of kids.
On your R1100GS I would go with one of our M72 type sidecars. If you need left side fitment we only offer this on our M72DX. The M72 sidecar has much more ground clearnece and will hold up much better off road and comes with bike specific not "universal" mounts for your bike. We also have steering modifications as well as an automotive rear wheel that can interchange with the wheel on the sidecar.

Make a U shaped brace across the floor and up each side, like they use to stiffen a convertible. You mentioned a subfloor for lower storage, so the bottom of the brace shouldn't interfere with your platform.

I have snapped some shots of the interior for you. As you can see, the seats are integral to the sidecar body. You would have to do some cutting to remove them.

As Jay indicated, this sidecar is really best suited to carrying lots of kids.

You have great sidecars but I'm afraid the budget won't allow a new M72. I got the GS for $1500 as a non runner with a burned out clutch (hopefully that's it) and hoping to keep the whole thing around $5k

I think that would work, I've spent a lot of time looking for pics of the interior to see how's it's put together.

The pic of the rear seat bottom, is that a whole glassed in base the seat is sitting on? Any idea what's inside it ... would it be possible to add a filler from the outside and use it as a gas tank? If I made my subfloor that same height with the tank under and then full storage at that same level along the length of the car would there be enough room to slide my feel under the front cowling?

This is difficult without actually having a car to look at.

If worst came to worst could I fit The Boss in the front and carry two sets of golf clubs in the back

Motorvation Formula II might work...

Flat floor about 6 feet long and the seat is held down by velcro, and they have an optional windshield, canopy, and side and rear windows. Gary that does mounting at Motorvation sleeps in his, and he's at least 6 foot tall.

Availability of the Oxford might be an issue as Jay indicated. However, maybe consider another option.

Historically the big Oxford came about because of a UK trend in the late 1970s, early 1980s to widen Palmas. Indeed, numerous sidecar guys did this, some being easily mistaken as factory jobs and quite good looking. In comparison, the eventual Oxford and its sister Cambridge were not universally seen as attractive.

So, the option of acquiring an old Palma and cutting it down centre could be considered. The basic method was to also cut the chassis, insert suitable steel spacing tubes, and use this as a jig. Simple connecting spars to create a foundation for filling the resultant gap. Some used aluminium sheet and car body filler to achieve the required body shape, whilst others did the job using fibreglass.

Screens to taste, chassis reinforcement, and paint job completed the deal. We did ours in about two weeks with a local, cooperative kit car manufacturer undertaking the fibreglass work.

Interestingly, this approach has also been used with Squire and Velorex sidecars.

I remember guys cutting the Velorex and widening it. There's an Oxford that's been listed for sale here in Canada for a long time, now asking $3k, don't know if that's a good price or not.

Hey GHGrrrl, thanks for the ideas on the Motorvation, having at least 6' inside and the top really is what I'd need and it looks lighter than the Oxford. I'll do some research.
