Question 2012 XR650 L Gas tank

I am looking to increase the mileage distance between those wonderful gas stations. I have consulted with the dealership about a new tank and they advised the Clark 4.3 gallon tank because of the ability to add the stock air fins for cooling effect on that motor.

I thought that I would ask for the opinion of the ADV riders group. Since there is so much "knowledge" here. (Meant in the up most flattering way) Do you have any other recommendations for tanks for the 2012 XR 650 L? If so they why? How will it effect with the cooling of the bike? Before you ask, it is a daily rider as a commuter bike in Atlanta traffic. 100 miles a day is not unheard of and would be considered typical. I would say more in the 150 ish range and there is some off road as well.

All comments will be considered and taken into account from their respective sources and thank you ahead of time for your input. It really does matter what you think.

I run an IMS 4.0gal tank on my 2006 Xr650L. I've been really happy with it, mounted easy and seems nice and durable (bike has been crashed a bunch of times offroad). I chose the IMS over the Clarke because i liked the shape of it better. It feels narrower to me than the stock tank (don't know if it actually is but the contours make it feel that way). I've heard that Clarke has a better finish on theirs but i have graphics on mine so that really doesn't matter. In use you probably only get 3.5gal out of it unless you lean the bike over to the left to get the fuel from the right side of the hump. Think of it as a reserve to your reserve Lol. I've never had the bike overheat in all the time I've owned it so it seems to direct airflow enough to keep the engine cool.

Hope this helps, Calvin

The Clarke tank for the XR650L comes in 4.0 and 4.7 gallon only...

And neither will accept the OE cooling fin crap Honda put on the OE tank....

If you want extra cooling.....install an oil cooler..

The dealer is refering to the XR650R tank that will accept the rad shrouds,,tell them to smarten up

The IMS tank design has a shape sorta like the OE wings. Some help perhaps.

the dealer was referring to the following:

XR650R (ALL) 4.3 GAL.
Includes new Clarke cap. Uses stock mounts and petcock. Capacity: 4.3 gallons or 16.3 litre ** NOTE: MODELS EQUIPPED WITH EMISSIONS CONTROLS YOU WILL HAVE TO REMOVE AND BLOCK OFF THIS AREA FOR THIS TANK TO FIT PROPERLY APPLIED RACING SELLS A NICE KIT: http://www.appliedrace.com

I agree with the oil cooler and I am going this rout as well. I was wanting to go with the 4.7 gal tank but was advised by the same dealer that it would not provide enough cooling and they also said that this was also advised by the Regional Service Manager.

Get the Acerbis 5.7 gallon tank, it has a good shape for directing air toward the engine and still feels acceptably narrow between the knees.

Yes I know the difference between the XRR and the XRL. And yes I question their comments and knowledge from time to time. Thanks for the help and I am going to order a new tank on Monday.

5.8 petcocks on both sides, no tipping the bike over to use all the fuel. A no brainer for a larger tank & now comes in clear also

IMS new tank

I know this is a dead thread but I heard that IMS is coming out with a new tank for the XR650L. It is a little bigger and has a slightly new design and it is supposed to have crossovers so that you can get all the fuel and you don't have to stop and tilt the bike over to get all the fuel. It will probably be at least six months till release but it is something to think about.

It may or may not be a consideration depending on where you park but there is a locking cap for IMS tanks and possibly Acerbis. I don't think there is one for clarke tanks.
