after reading about water pump failures i am getting a little paranoid, i have an 08 990 with 40k ish.
Has anyone had one done more miles without doing the pump?
just asking....dont want to hear horror stories but ones that say yeah 100k and never touched it!!

Stop the paranoia and throw in a CJ designs shaft, done.

That's too many miles based on the design. Change it. It's not hard.

Changed mine at 48k to Cj's design. The original was fine. Oh well. No worries for a loooooong time now.

According to the latest Cycle World, Jimmy Lewis has a first year low number 950 w/over 100k miles on it and has never touched the waterpump.

That's the exception and not the rule, though.

CJ shaft and ignore it forever.

07 they changed the shafts and seals.
Mine went 40,000 miles and this is what it looked like, thats at 200 magnification. i did it over last winter as preventive, didn't need it in my book. I flushed my cooling system twice the first year so that may have helped mine.

You should have changed it once already. It's time.

I've seen the new grey seal with 8k miles look very worn and seen one at 30k miles look ok. It's easy to do it every other valve adjust or about 18k miles then you don't have to worry.

Own my 04 950A since new. Has almost 80,000km on original setup. Have no plans to change it until I see signs that I need to. Had the clutch out recently and it is clean inside. I am running a stainless oil filter since second oil change at 7500km. The only problem with forums is that generally you only hear of the fails not ones that dont.

Nothing like preventive maintenance throw one in now . Not a huge job or cost .

I just did mine,, it had 30K and the shaft was pretty worn, it had the telltale foam in the clutch cover. By all accounts,, pre-2006 its a coin toss, some of the stock shafts were hard and lasted a long time some didn't..

As easy as it is to take the clutch cover off,, an occasional check is a easy quick maintenance item..

Since the bike was new to me,, I did it, especially after I asked the PO when the water pump was done and he gave me a ?? look.. Mine had the original red seal in it..
