2" Rox Risers on 2008 KLR 650

I bought some 2" risers in the hopes of making my KLR a bit more comfortable. They clearly didn't fit (in terms of cable play) just bolting them in place. I've read comments about taking off the plastics, seat and gas tank and rerouting all of the cables but I can't seem to find any confirmation that this is actually going to work without replacing the cables.

I ride my bike constantly so I'd rather not get it all the way apart to find out I have to order parts to finish the job. Has anyone successfully installed these risers using this method?

I'm pretty sure the most you can raise the bars on a new gen KLR is 25mm without going to custom cables. My first gen has 75mm of rise with stock cables.

For anyone looking for a confirmation from someone with experience in this issue here's the great response I received from Rox:

Quote:
That is the case. We have several folks that run our 2 inch risers on the KLR with stock cables. You do have to reroute all of your cables, but they do work. Not everybody has to pull the tank either, reroute behind the triple clamp, cut zip ties and so on. There isn’t many applications out there that you can bolt 2 inch risers on without doing some sort of work to your cables. OEM’s run the cables kind of tight for various reasons, but normally give enough cable length to put a riser on. I hope this helps. If you read forums a lot, there is a good chance you will end up beating your head against the wall. Folks that have never put risers on anything before tend to chime in on the “do I have enough cable” posts and give their completely unknowledgeable opinions. Thus freaking everyone out that is concerned about it. I’ve even seen dealers do that before. Scare someone saying that it will be unsafe and so on. We have setup many different machines here, and with a little patience in most cases we can get things to work out. Some machines just flat out don’t have enough cables to do it, but the KLR does. Good luck in your ventures, and we are always here to answer any questions you may have.

I doubt you will be able to re-route the clutch cable behind the triple clamp, the throttle cables, yes, but the clutch cable, no....

good luck with it.

also be careful when you have moved the throttle cables behind the triple camp, when you turn the bars hard to the right, the cables get pinched in a very sharp bend and it may kink them (this nearly happened to my KLX, when I put 2" Rox on it)

having new cables made is not the deal breaker it appers to be! if you look around, you'll find at least one local company that will make/adapt your current cable to work. about three years ago i found such a company to remake a brake line for me.it had two caliper attachments- they made the new one for under 75$ !! i was one happy camper!(all new materials, except for the block that two brake lines branch off of)

as someone who has owned a KLR650 for more than 20 yrs (the same one) and worked on dozens of them (mainly new gen ones now) I am NOT guessing. As I pointed out moving the throttle cables behind the triple clamp WILL result in them being pinched if you are not careful.

but hey, what do I know...

I'm out

Neither of those are declarative statements. How else should they be interpreted?

I am totally, 100%, without a doubt, sure that Rox Risers will work on the newer KLR's. How sure am I? If I am wrong I will box up and ship to you, my girlfriend's kid. Yours to keep.

I'm not sure, I think maybe you might have to reroute some cables and brake hoses to use the 2" Risers though. My buddy's cousin's son put them on his KLR 1200 and it was possibly easy. However, he had to upgrade to the Super Sherpa tank or something like that. This was a long time ago; details are hazy.

I put a set of Rox on my '09 KLR, but the goal was
to move the bars forward 2", not up. They are
a perfect fit, with no changes needed, except needing
to trim the ignition key a bit...
