Radar Detector Mounting
I am a cop magnet. I have been looking around to see what other people have been doing with radar detectors, the stuff I found was kind of old. I am thinking of mounting the detector on the dash (my gps and spot is on the bars). I am wondering if anyone has had interference problems with the windscreen or anything like that. Also, what equipment are you running and is it successful?

A windshield won't cause reduced effective range for a detector
unless the tint coatings on the windshield are metallic. I don't think
many plastic motorcycle windshields have metallic coatings so I
wouldn't worry about the windshield. The wavelength used in
LIDAR will pass through your windshield easily also.
A bike mounting does have other potential issues though.
If your body will block the detector's rear-facing sensors
then your detector may not work well ( if at all )
if a cop is using radar or LIDAR from behind you. I've
gotten a ticket from LIDAR which was used by a cop
in a moving car which was approaching me from the rear,
so this can be a problem.
Generally the Valentine 1 is the best detector. Some tests
will make claims that other detectors are "better" but I
have owned several Valentine 1 detectors and I've seen how
well they work in the real world and I have nothing but praise
for them. They use surface-mount technology in the electronics
and the case is made of metal rather than plastic and the thing is
just a super well made piece of equipment. Also, when Valentine
comes up with improvements they can retrofit those improvements to
your older detector, which means it won't become obsolete ( they
do charge for the updates but at the fact that they offer the update
service sets them apart from other manufacturers who will just
sell you a whole new detector ).
Valentine does sell remote displays which would enable more flexibility
in mounting, and that's worth looking into if you decide you're interested
in a Valentine.
By the way, it's worth noting that if the cop using the
radar or LIDAR is clever enough, you can get a ticket
no matter how good the detector is, because if the cop
uses the "instant-on" K-band radar or LIDAR your
detector will alert you but it will be too late. So you still have
to use smart tactics like not speeding when you are the first vehicle
in a pack of vehicles. Let someone else take point position and let
them get the ticket instead of you. The radar detector can help a lot
but it does not mean you cannot possibly get a ticket.

I have mine (Escort 8500) on a magnetic ram mount on the dash of the bike. I've had it mounted this way on my last bike too, which was not a KTM. It works well. Keeps the radar detector out of the elements and bugs, and it will still detect radar signals coming from behind even though my body is between it and the radar source. I dont know about laser though...I probably make a better door than a window!

I used a Bel RX65 (same internals as the original Passport 8500) for years, and mounted it on the dash area of my 950 using velcro.
For mostly street use it is perfect, though the mounting may need to be more robust if you do more than a little bit of rough off-roading.
I'm a fan of the Bel and Escort products. Valentine1 owners I know like those too. Give yourself a bit of time to get used to your choice...and my advice is to not "lean" on the detector in areas where Lasers are in use, as you need a jammer to beat those guys.
