Rekluse EXP for 690 ER KTM?

Hi,

Called Rekluse today and they said an EXP for the 690 was "in the works", which I guess means they thought about it. There is no timeline for starting. Maybe if we could show them how many folks are interested, they might move their timeline up and we might get one.

Anybody else???

This isn't the first go 'round of people inquiring about an auto clutch for the 690. The reality is that because it has a slipper clutch (NOT to be confused with a centrifugal clutch) it would require replacing more parts (i.e. inner hub, basket, etc) compared to a bike that was delivered with a standard clutch. Totally possible, but it would drastically increase the cost of production and cost to the end buyer. I'm pretty sure that you would lose some of the benefits of the slipper clutch in street use too.

Add that to the amount of 690's out there versus the percent of 690 riders that would be willing/wanting to spend the money on it and I doubt it will be worth it for the manufacturer in the end. Maybe I'm just a pessimist, but I wouldn't hold your breath.

although now that the wheels are turning in my head... would it be possible for the slipper and auto (like the exp version) clutches to work together or would the auto cancel out the slipper action on a high rpm downshift into a corner?

I know it's old news that the Rekluse EXP IS available for the 690 (yea, I know, eat my words), but has anyone actually bought/ used one yet? I'm not planning on buying one, just curious how the centrifugal clutch gets along with the function of the slipper.

Friend with a bum wrist ordered one, I'm also waiting for his review. If it's like their other clutches, it'll work exactly as advertised.

Rekluse's disengage at low rpm to prevent stalling and take over the clutch slipping/feathering function for you.

I can't imagine it would have any effect on a high RPM downshift, but I'm only going by my experience riding with one in my 530.

My non-engineer brain is just trying to put these pieces together. The slipper clutch inner hubs "ramp" apart from each other (essentially pushing the pressure plate out and partially/fully disengaging the clutch) when the rear wheel tries to override the engine...

The Rekluse EXP basically uses balls that are forced up ramps with centrifugal force (based on engine RPM) causing the clutch pack to swell/increase in width which in turn applies pressure to the pressure plate.

So when I drop 3 gears at once coming into an asphalt corner and the slipper tries to "loosen" the pack, isn't the Rekluse trying to "tighten" the clutch pack at the same time? Which mechanism will run out of throw first? I'm pretty sure the slipper has more throw than the Rekluse so both should maintain their respective functions... right?

KTM 690 Enduro R Rekluse EXP

So I just got off the phone with a Technical Support specialist at Rekluse.

He explained the clutch engagement is instantaneous and once the clutch is full engaged it acts just like the stock clutch would up until the point where the engine starts to chug and stall, that's when the Rekluse disengages and keeps the bike from stalling. So the slipper function remains intact, and the use of the clutch lever for High RPM downshifts is necessary.

Hope this helps and that I explained it well.

'Slipper' clutches are designed to not slide the rear wheel when downshifting in to a corner on pavement, and protect engine from over revving. Rekluse simply disengages when motor is at idle. As far as needing a manual clutch lever for downshifts, haven't had one on any of my dirtbikes in a long time.
