It was a total blast!!!

Everyone,

Thanks sooo much for putting on a great event and one of the finest times I've had on a motorcycle!

This was my first navigation event and I really enjoyed that element of the race. I was fortunate to have the bike and nav equipment run flawlessly throughout. I was really happy with my result considering the field of riders and the fact that, well, I'm not that fast!!

The real fun was being there and hanging out with all of you. Thanks to Jeremy for being a great host and feeding me several times! To my friend Dave for being a great support team (CactusDave). I enjoyed having breakfast with Cameron Steele, rooming with Quinn in the bivy and getting drunk with Larry R. and Carl and acting like old friends!!

Good to see Jason, Bill and Mike again too!

Thanks again to all and see you guys at the next race.

John

Ensenada. B.C.

Andy only had the mileage from his GPS unit on the second day, so he couldn't adjust it at all. But I think he had a good tire track from Quinn to follow

I'm down in SF this weekend. I don't think I mentioned, except to Dave and john that I swapped out my cam and rockers on Wednesday night and other than a blast around town I hadn't tested the new setup. It was a cam is never used in that motor.

The hotcam I'd had, eaten itself and the existing rockers to hell. Hey Dave, that was the ticking we'd heard.....

"But Jeremy, why do I see a tap in this photo?" Good question. Pull up a chair and I'll tell you.

As some may know, these heads are known for stripping somewhat easily. Even at specified torque. Well, luckily I had a set of 6mmx1.0 helicoils. Unluckily, I had already done that once to this same hole. The one with the alignment dowel nonetheless.

So there I was, a stripped oversized helicoiled hole and no one to do it with. (Mixing metaphors). It turns out however that I also have an 8x1.25 helicoil set also. Well... Guess what. The 6x1 fits inside the 8x1.25... But at what cost? It's now a 6x1.25. Just so happened I brought all my bolt kits with me. So with the hole tapped and two helicoils inside each other I set out to find the needed bolt. Both length and cap size.

Turns out that wasn't the easiest part either. The easiest part was the act if going across the border and waiting a half an hour while the postal annex tried to find my box. See, they go and pickup the deliveries for that day in one of the employees trunk. So, when I had emailed and called back and forth a few times with my buddy Steve in SF (who I'm going to visit to do the tear down) I found out that the delivery confirmation suggested it was in their possession. Now, coincidentally I mention the trunk of the pickup car, but that was a literary device called foreshadowing. See, what really happened was (insert "Clue" different ending music here) that we spent 10minutes looking around the already sorted packages. I then got the tracking number and we looked again. Suddenly some light bulb, and I think I actually saw it, came on for the guy that handles the packages as he says to the other lady that picks them up, "what about in your trunk? Could it be there?" "No we emptied it there's nothing there." "Can I go look anyway," he says to her, in such a way that I could see the disdain of their relationship melting away forming a stalactite of anger and contempt. Her heaving breasts and his quaking thighs were never to speak of that night again.....

So he found the package, my package, the USPS package.... And I was on my way. Well not quite. This place charges a package handling fee normally. Now given that it had taken 30 Minutes to find it, I hoped it would be waived.

"Two dollars please." F me.

So I'd found a bolt that would be the best possible match I could possibly come up with in my rack if spare bolts. I found a washer also, because what I'm about to use was a 6mm thread with an 8mm socket cap. Needed a washer, yes, we all think in unison.

But that wasn't the only stripped bolt hole. But it would be the only one I was to fix. I didn't have time to pull the motor and tap the other, which had also been helicoiled. I had to hope for the max amount if RTV and the remaining threads to grab what possible.

I reassembled the bike late that night, let the RTV cure overnight, and took it for a ride Thursday morning. The morning before Ensenada media event. I drove it as hard and fast as I could to create a leak and nothing.

I'd done it. I fixedly bike with the metaphoric duct tape and bailing wire. I was victorious.

And stuff and things happily ever after......
