he did his first Dakar on an XR4

I reckon he'll be in a redbull sponsored auto during the year. if he's doing o.k. drive in the next dakar. If he's not competitive in the auto, dakar on 2 wheels. either way it will get plenty of press exposure for redbull which is what they really pay him for.

Privateer, from memory he was working as a mech in a bike shop and rasied funds selling wine with Dakar labels.

Well that same year, his first in rallye, he stuck an xr650 into third in 2 other rallies, first in another and became a factory BMW rider, so I reckon he thought he might go alright.

a year earlier as a low paid mech with a decent trials and enduro background I'd say he didn't
