Question iPhone5 GPS app's, need advise...........

Howdy All,

Admittedly my Internet search foo is very weak, if there is a thread on GPS app's that work on an iPhone5 could someone direct me to it, or if there is no thread concerning this subject could someone give advise on which app to buy that would work for on and off road use. EASE of use is very important, I am NOT computer literate and this is my first cell phone. Thanks.

The app that I use is MotionX-GPS. It works very well for one dollar, and does everything I need it to. For turn by turn I like the maps app that comes on the Iphone 5.

MotionX Drive is the companion app to MotionX GPS. I think it's about $10 year for routable map access. I've out several thousand miles on it and never had a problem. Highly recommended!

Thats the one I have been considering, do you have personal experience with this product, is it something a computer idiot such as myself can work with?

I still remember our ride together in Death Valley, good times, very good times.

Try GAIA GPS app from the app store, nice and easy to use. Yet you can get pretty advanced with it. I am not considering a GPS anymore, I will just use my IPHONE for everything.

I use Navigon.
Pros:
  • Works everywhere regardless of cell signal
  • No anual fee 9though not super cheap up front)
  • Maps updated very often so haven't run into somewhere that doesn't actually exist
  • Pretty easy to use
  • Able to save a lot of routes
  • Great for A-B type direction
Cons:
  • Can't download routes from computer to iPhone (apparently the app can do it but iPhone's architecture prevents it since it needs to look like an external drive when connected to a comp)
  • creating routes can be a bit complex as you have to do it on the screen of the phone
  • Not enough detail to use effectually off road

I had come across GAIA when looking at GPS apps. You would recommend it? It looks like it could be great for all outdoor sports (other than battery life on Mtn bikes & hiking). I don't feel that $20/year is a bad price if the maps are kept up to date.

Are you easily able to download tracks that others have provided?

I use Tomtom for iPhone and to me, as a GPS noob, it's a great app.

Reason I picked Tomtom is for the offline map, I don't need GSM coverage to use the GPS. I like this app but there are things that can be and should be improved: the route planning, and the ability to save the route you have planned to be retrieved later. Perhaps it's because you can not plan your route on a PC and import the file to the app.

So far I only use it mainly as a locator, to show where my current position is. I don't use the turn by turn navigation extensively, only used it several times.

Ideal app for motorcycles

I have yet to find the ideal motorcycle iPhone app:
- downloadable map database for out-of-signal riding
- ability to download routes from Google Maps
- get turn-by-turn directions to stay on the route

Motion-X comes close - but has no turn-by-turn capability to follow a route.

I use Magellan Roadmate for the full US map database - but pricey $50+

Other's I've used with good results:
Motion-X Drive
Waze (great for LA or other areas with frequent traffic problems)
Nav-Mii for free 3G maps in Europe (Germany, Luxembourg)
Greatest Roads - folks post their ride routes in your area

I use a combo fo Motion-X which others have mentioned and just downloaded MapsWithMe. Found out about this app from a RR where a fellow Inmate is using it to tour South America.

I don't really care about turn-by-turn directions because I want to use it for off road in remote areas, but which of these apps for iPhone 5 allow you to:

- download a route from Google maps
- cache SATELLITE tiles for off-line use (in airplane mode)?

Thanks!
