sneaking on the rincon ohv shortcut trail in los angeles ....

does/has anyone done this? i rode up the 39 in azusa last weekend just to see how the entrance and trail looked but ofcourse it's gated up and i couldnt get through by myself but i did see two bicyclists who said they just rode down from the 2 and that the road is in great condition. well, the voicemail at the rangers office says its closed for maintenance but the trails been closed for years according to past years blogs. probably just too many people wanting to go on it and too hard to upkeep. so i'm wondering if anyones snuck on the trail or has any knowledge about it...

thanks

This has been closed for well over a decade. Herrhelmet and I did sneak past the closures about six years ago and made it almost all the way to the 2 and then got chased all the way down the mountain by LEOs.

I've never gotten the gate code.

Sneak by two times, rode to 2 at the top and then rode dirt bikes to Newcombs!

It was easy to get by at the bottom, to the left of the gate over a hump.

My brother and I got caught riding out in Henry Coe a few years ago. Closing CA state parks to save money woulda been the best thing that ever happened to us.

Pretty well, all things considered. They let us go because we had out-of-state plates on our dirtbikes, played dumb, and didn't run. Coulda easily gone the other way though, and think the only real reason why it didn't was because they were being laaaaaaazy. So lazy that they actually gave us the gate-code so that we could let ourselves out because they didn't want to have to follow us to the nearest exit.

I rode rincon from 39 to the 2 a few years ago with a banned inmate. It was fire road the whole way with one washed out area. There were quite a few cool canyons we passed through on the way. Lots of burn areas in various states of renewal and a few areas of older growth. Even saw a some rather large bear paw prints on the trail. It was a highly risky endeavor but a blast to explore.

Rincon has been closed to vehicle traffic for a few years, maybe since 2010, as Edison uses the road to put in powerlines across the San Gabriel mtns. You used to be able to get a code to unlock the gates from the Glendora ranger station. Code was good for 2wks.

I ride the road a lot on a mtn bike to access some good singletrack trails that drop back down into the foothill towns. They keep it well graded for the Edison trucks and is now totally not worth the effort or risk for a motorcycle. You're not missing anything.

Sounds like it's well worth it to get on your single track...

They just gave up because someone found a dead body with a couple bullets to the head a canyon or so over. We saw it on the news later when we got home.
Helos were all over the place for the rest of the day.
