How closed is Fossil Creek

I have heard that Fossil Creek road is closed. I was wondering if the whole thing was closed or are any parts of it open. And is it closed so bad a motorcycle couldn't get thru.

We might want to do an out-and-back ride from the west side in the next month or so.

I also think there is a road of it to the south that might be interesting. But it might cross the Virgin River. (I haven't looked at the maps in the area for a few years.)

Somewhere

Somewhere I have Forest Service pictures of the several TONS of plastic irrigation pipe that was removed by helicopter from the Fossil Creek area also the huge Mary Jane fire that ensued afterwards.

Give any credence to the buried rebar spikes in the Happy Jack area ?

And possible answers to why many FS roads & motorized trails get closed down

See something, Say something. ITS YOUR LAND!

where specifically is it closed? I might be interested in traveling through there in a few weeks on my way back from Jerome so I'm interested in more info.

GM lets me drag the route to this spot. i don't see why it would be closed there though. Why was it closed in the first place?

The state blocked the road to limit traffic/people that were visiting fossil creek.

Too many people were littering and trashing the place. It is sad.

OK. So it looks like, according to this PDF from the Forest Service that GM is right on the money as to where it is closed. That sucks. Some people are just stupid.

I couldn't find anything in the pdf about where it was closed. And I don't know how to do routing in Google Maps. I would really like some rough idea of where it is closed.

And can you get to the closure from both directions, but you just can go thru the closure?

I have been thru there once so a general description of where it is closed would be good enough.

Edit. Never mind when I scrolled down more I saw the map.

Yeah you can make it to about 16 miles in from the West side (Camp Verde in from the 260) and about 5 miles in from the East side(Strawberry from the 87).

I understand the road was closed due to a landslide or collapse in the road along the cliff side. I have never heard anything different. Maybe Verboten can fill us in on the truth.

He filled me in:

I heard about the congestion and litter issues from the park ranger in the tonto office. I guess I should have said federal instead of state.

And you can simply call 928-226-4611 to find out if the road is open as well. It is a recorded message 24x7, updated when conditions change. If the phone line is to be trusted, the road is currently closed.

The claimed reason for the road closure is rock slides. One has to wonder if this is a legitimate reason, or yet another step towards closing the area to easy access, thereby offering it a higher level of protection. I'm sure everyone who enjoys going there, has had their fill of dumped diapers, beer cans, and styrofoam coolers in various stages of decomposition :(

I remember the west section of road as being pretty washboarded. I'll bet it can be a nightmare if there's a lot of campers heading for the creek.

I also thought I saw somewhere about a landslide being the issue. But that was long enough ago that one would have thought the road would be fixed by now.

yep, still closed to keep the "valley" rifraff out on the strawberry side. original excuse was a slip, then extended due to how well it worked reducing traffic. open from camp verde, but it's hard on a car or truck, my bikes have no problem. i would stay away if it's wet. road will take you clear to the river at childs. the crossing there is a minimum of two feet deep and 100 yds wide.
