So what's the deal with cutting to the front of the line while waiting for constructi

I've always been told by various flaggers that it is state law that allows motorcycles to move up to the front of the line while waiting for the pilot truck. Did it today on the Parks and almost got in a fist fight with a trucker right behind me. Of course, the one time this happens the flagger just stepped back and left me to fend for myself. So what's the story?

I've also been invited/asked to do so in many states.

A few years ago, as I pulled up front, the flagger strongly informed me: "We don't do that here in the State of Washington."

Haven't heard of it being state law. I never presume to have the privilege, and do so, only if the flagger waves me to the front. Sometimes it winds up being the pleasant distraction of a hottie coed, and sometimes it's a lifelong stoner with a low IQ, and the conversation winds up making you wish you'd stayed behind the line of traffic!

I never used to do that but now that I'm a senior member of society I decided it was time to go to the head of the line.

Gal flagger at Phalen Creek bridge repair (near Fielding Lake Richardson H) got flustered by it but calmed down after a polite hello.

The guys/gals at the various scenes on the Parks hiway either flagged me up or I just went with no fuss.

Of course if the on-coming pilot car is near I don't do it. Have not had a cager/trucker complain (that I could hear...)

It also means we need to keep up with the pilot truck (they usually go too slow not too fast), no slowing up the herd either during
the pilot car exercise or after. Not a problem for me.

If it is for you, stay in line.

This needs to be the usual biz for AK. Its the safe thing to do.

But if riders go to the front and then hold people up afterwards it'll kill the deal for all of us.

We were in the Yukon at a stop for a flag woman. She waved us to the front, but Spousal Unit prefered to be last. The flag woman was adamant and demanded we move to the front; SU was just as determined that we weren't moving. Finally SU cut her engine and said she had stalled it it it wouldn't start (and it wouldn't with the kill switch thrown). Angry flagger walked away, and walked even more angry when she heard the bike start as she reached the head of the line. Me, I'm just along for the ride.

I pull to the front nearly every day at the Healy construction. Never a hostile word. They have a big orange sign that says 'motorcycles uses extreme caution'. Getting out of the impatient line of cagers is my version of extreme caution.

In my experience it has been inconsistent. When it's a DOT crew doing maintenance, and DOT flaggers, the general rule seems to be: Everyone stays in their place in line. But with flaggers hired by a private construction firm, more than likely it will be: Motorcycles to the front of the line. But not always. Almost like it's up to the individual flagger.

When the Caribou Creek stretch of the Glenn Hwy was being rebuilt it gave me the opportunity to get to know all the flaggers/pilot car drivers quite well. As a result I always went to the front of the line, as did any other riders who were in line with me. But luck like that can't be counted upon.

Been there. But it was with three real asshats on their still idling HDs about two vehicles back from the front of the very long line.
Solarmoose & Alcan pretty much covered the issue.

I GO TO THE FRONT NO MATTER THE SITUATION...IF THEY GIVE ME SHIT, I PULL TO THE SIDE, SHUT OFF THE BIKE, AND TELL THE FLAGGER I'LL GO WHEN TRAFFIC CLEARS, FOR MY SAFETY. I THEN EXPLAIN THAT I WILL BE TRAVELING FASTER THAN THE 4 WHEELERS, AND I DON'T WANT EAT THEIR DUST, PLUS THEY WILL NEVER SEE ME AGAIN WHEN WE LEAVE THE CONSTRUCTION ZONE.

OR, I USE A MADE UP FOREIGN LANGUAGE, AND PLAY LIKE I DON'T UNDERSTAND ENGLISH...WORKS WELL! THEY WILL GET FRUSTRATED!

(OF COURSE THAT IS IN THE LESSER 48)

Motorcycles to the FRONT, with extreme caution.
Often by invitation, never by intimidation.

They moved us to the front on 1 of 3 zones. Luckily it was the time that a semi that tried to run us off the road would have been behind us in line.

Just passed through your awesome state a few days ago. It was very inconsistant, with some flaggers motioning us up to the front, and others ignoring us. Once, we had a few truckers say go in front, but we had a doosh in a rental suburban cut in front of us just to have fun spraying us with rocks...

Herkjerk, did i meet you at coldfoot? We were the blue and white ktm 990's from ny swapping tires...
