No worries Pete. The Kiwi connection is ...

I'M A PROUD KIWI!!! ... and an ex-President of the Whangarei Motorcycle Club.

Also my service crew person is Ben Clark, also a proud Kiwi and living in Motueka. I will be taking Ben with me as well as a manager from here in Perth. (Don will become a "honorary Kiwi" for the two weeks of Dakar - whether he likes it or not).

The previous Dakar entries of Kiwis (2 I think) have, like me, been based overseas. There simply is not the exposure to this type of racing in NZ for it to be likely for a NZ resident Kiwi to enter the Dakar. There also isn't the income potential to be able to afford to compete in any qualifying event from NZ, let alone the actual Dakar as well. (You have to meet some rally racing experience criteria to enter the Dakar, and that costs money in itself).

Having said that, my goal is to make my campaign a very KIWI flavoured one. I would dearly love to get some NZ sponsorship behind me to promote the Kiwi link. My bikes at Safari and the Desert Challenge have always had Kiwi flags, Silver Ferns and/or Kiwis on them somewhere but now it's time to up a few gears and get some Kiwi businesses behind me.

The bike's colour will be to suit whichever sponsor is prepared to put in with decent coin. At the moment the bike is white but likely at this stage to turn silver. (I could live with the new Air New Zealand livery for the right contribution. Anyone with any inside management contacts there?)

Ciao

I've been trying to think of possible Kiwi sponsors for a motorcycle Dakar challenge and I think tourism NZ would be a good fit.

The opportunity to promote NZ as an amazing motorcycling adventure destination for both on and off road riding to an international audience of millions of motorcycling nutters is there for the taking.

Of course they may want a promotional video to coincide with their sponsorship - shouldn't be too hard to find a few blokes to do an all expenses paid adventure ride the length and breadth of God's own though ....maybe KTM would like to donate a couple of those flash new 1190R's for the trip anyway just a thought

Maybe Suzuki sponsorship.
How many people have done Dakar on GN250's?

Yep - Tourism NZ are on my "hit list". As are Air New Zealand. The trick with many of these things is "it's not what you know but who you know" and hence my reference to "someone on the inside".

It was a big day today ...

Does this make my bum look big?:

My rego papares are the last document I am required to provide to the ASO for my entry paperwork to be complete. (Everything else has already been submitted).

Yeeeehaaaah

Jonky? John Key? PM. An inmate to pm?
Took me a little while ... they change PM over this side of the ditch so often it's hard to remember that we generally only change the PM by voting in NZ.. Here, a PM gets voted in, then kicked out, a replacement slides in, gets kicked out and the original voted PM comes back in ... only to get voted out (we'll see the last chapter in September). Then we start all over again with another idiot and his party.
Lucky there isn't an inmate called "Jonky" or he would have been confused if I'd sent him an email.
Ciao

Warning - Naked pictures!

So 4 days ago the 450RFR passed inspection at the Department of Transport inspection service and now it wouldn't pass for sure!

The seat is on it's way to the fabulous James Renazco for "the treatment". I was sooo impressed with the special seat he built me for the 530 when I was rallying that, so I really don't have a choice but to look forward to the same brilliant work again. I expect I'll spend a lot more time on the bike than Coma, Chalico, Caselli, etc, so I'm sure I'll get my monies worth and really appreciate the comfort of a Renazco seat rebuild.

I'm now preparing a list of anything I come across that needs replacement that I don't already have. I already have a few things like the chain guide, swingarm chain slider, brake pads, etc but also know I have lots of stuff to buy yet including chain, sprockets, etc. I'll also get the forks and shock serviced while everything is apart.

Not too much planned in the way of modifications but possibly going to get the header pipe ceramic coated to reduce the exhaust temperature in the bashplate area and reduce the risk of catching fire, as several other 450RFR's have done in the past. There are a couple of other things that might be changing on the bike, but I can't say anything about that yet. Watch this space.

Other than that, it'll be a top to bottom dismantle, clean and check every single part and re-grease and replace anything that needs it. Looking carefully for any areas that are wearing or signs of contact, eg on wiring looms, etc. I also suspect that the counter shaft oil seal is leaking, as there seems to be more oil being flicked up than I put on in the way of change lube. I'll confirm that when I have the chain and countershaft sprocket off.

I'll let you all know what I discover.
Ciao
