25MPG on a 990 Adv?

Ok I know I'm not setup for milage, but does this seem right?

I'm getting 25 MPG Highway @ Sea level
  • 16T/45T
  • TKC/Mefo Explorer
  • FMF Q4
  • "high flow" map (per FMF and set by the dealer)
Thanks
T

Sounds heavy, we two up loaded on our carbed SE are getting 40 - 48 MPG depending on the right hand

We have the same gearing too

Kiwi- His bike is Fuel Injected.

Are you getting any EFI codes? Stock except for the pipes?

Check your O2 sensors wires.

No other engine mods....just the pipes. The maps were done at a dealer. I need to take it in pretty soon for one of those low cost KTM oil changes...are there any codes or other things I can ask them about. (other than my milage sucks)

I don't wanna start the whole mileage thing again, but I have a 04 Go 950 with a head 2 wind jet kit and it gets 130 miles to the reserve light so about 25 mpg exactly...I mean exactly what it did before the jet changes. really love the bike but it makes going anywhere a pain in the ass, especially with my friend on his 1150 GS at 50 mpg.

But you have a better bike, have more fun, and exceptional kids too, so you win.

The aftermarket maps are real gas-guzzlers.

I had the akrapovic map before and got probably half the milage I get now after changing back to the stock map!

I was a little hesitant about running aftermarket exhausts and stock map but temps are normal and I even checked the spark plugs when I changed oil a couple of months back - they looked fine so I'm not worried anymore. Probably set up pretty rich from the factory anyway.

I've heard that people see huge variations in mpg depending on if they run side panniers or not - the 990 is pretty slim for such a big bike so they end up right in the wind blast.

At 25mph its running fat- I think with your gearing properly tuned should be closer to 35mph, but all that depends on how aggressively you drive it.

Of course you can look at the ends of the exhausts, and plugs to notice rich running but to really know how much, you might consider gas analyzer. If you have access to a dyno near by, it wont cost much to have a base run done with the gas analyzer to map out your AF ratios at RPM increments- this will tell you how rich the engine is running through out the range wehre you normally ride (1500-6500rpm) and where to adjust your map, which can be done via Tune ECU. Bike needs to be nice & warm, have them run 4th gear up to 6500rpm. And if there is time, do a 5th gear run which will load the engine a little differently to see if there is any variance in the AF ratios.

good luck

I would suggest the mapping is heavily fueled in the wrong places, my good mate with a SD-R has corrected his with Tune ECU/PC 5 autotune, took some doing but he gets far better fuel efficiency now and stronger right through the range

His was extremely rich at idle and mid/cruising band and lean as hell at the top, now he has the perfect curve, torque and power to go with it.

You have two options.

1. Dealer loads a different map back onto the bike. But you are dependent on the dealer to have the map changed every time if needed.

When I had my 990 I was running a stock map with the aftermarket pipes.

2. Go the TuneECU route. This will allow you to load your own EFI maps and there are enough people out there that someone from this site in your neck of the woods has to be around that has done this who should be willing to provide some assistance and advice.

3. Do you own oil change, it is not worth the price the dealer want when you can do it yourself.

here is a writeup on the HOW, very easy to do just take your time.

1) I agree on the new map and Tune ECU.
2) Check your cruising RPMs on highway and consider softening the fueling around those RPMs a smidge.
3) Consider a 17T front sprocket on longer highway rides, which will lower cruising RPMs and increase MPG. With practice this is a 10 minute job.
4) Carry 1-2 Liter fuel bottles on longer trips.

BTW I have heard the Q4 hurts MPG. I am thinking of an Adventuretank 2 into 1 with Q4 exhaust for my 990 anyway ($399).

For comparison.

07 990
Leo Vince System (this is the mid pipe and the cans not just the bolt on cans like the Q4)

Stock Map (dont know what version but it was loaded in late 08)

45mpg commuting to work
38-40ish off road

I dont think the pipes are what kill the mileage so much as just having a far to aggressive EFI map loaded.

Just my .02

I live close and I might have an extra 17 tooth. Plus I have tune ecu and stuff and a 990.

Come out to the east side meet up sometime.
