Perhaps a split between trail biking and pure off-road could work, that way the hardcore off-roadies that in any case speak their own language that no-one really understands can bore each other to death and the gentlemen and woman that speak understandably whilst touring on the dirt can converse about the finer aspects of the human experiences....lol!
I see it this way, thumpers either do hard-core dirt where death and mayhem are expected or they take the time to explore and soak in nature on the back of two wheels with calculated caution (mostly cos they have kids or other dependents).... the point is they usually have different views and reasons why they actually ride thumpers. A XT600 rider couldn't care less about the air "hang time" that is possible on the back of a 449 Husqy. I'm sure a Husaberg FE501 owner fails to see the need to carry or acquire extended fuel supplies and soft luggage....????

That is the way I see it also. It would curtail the endless arguments about why a tricked out Dr650 can do everything a KTM 530 can do or vice versa.

Finally, a few folks seeing the light here (though I don't forsee the arguments ending ). It'd also not confuse things in regards to displacement.

Sure there would be some bikes that blur the lines, but that'll naturally happen.

Keep it simple
Thumpers:
Race Bred - At home on the rough stuff, but don't mind the quick road stint.
Dual Citizens - They've got no issue being in the dirt, or making their way to Prudhoe bay& Back
2-Strokers - Pass the Pre-Mix please.

Going to have to name names for which bikes go where, otherwise the first month will be dedicated to that one dude who entered a 24 hour race on a KLR650 and somebody will ride a 350EXC to TDF just for the trolling points!

530EXC - 525EXC(RFS) - XR600R - XR650L - DR650 - KLR650
Which two of these motorcycles are different enough that the line should be between them?

And where does a 690 Enduro fit in there?

Yes this kind of major split needs to be objective and quantifiable as it can be not subjective and open to endless quibbling. This seems to metastasize into full blown Duchebaggery on a regular basis.

How about:

Singles on the street = street legal = tagged = shiny hineys
Singles in the dirt = not street legal = not tagged = dirty butts
2-strokes = spit in your crack

A race bred / dual citizens split could also work. Probably no need to also split off 2 strokes then as they virtually all fall squarely into the race bred category & the volume of smoker discussion isn't huge.

Cheers
Clint

EDIT: maybe that is part of the solution... have a subforum in Singles called "Make-Specific Indexes" or something where all the indexes are stickied and all the indexed threads are below. No new threads in that subforum and all the mega threads are organized in one place. Maybe it will motivate some of the non-indexed bikes to get with the program. As make-specific mega-threads develop, mods can move them over to that subforum.

This latter option could be used in conjunction with the smoker split and possibly meet the end that you described in the OP.
I have many more posts to read through, but if I had a gun to my head right now to make a decision, I think it would be:

- Rename to Singles
- Make a modern 2-stroke subforum
- Make a >499cc thumper subforum
- Make a <500cc subforum
- Make a model-specific megathreads subforum

But I'd be tempted to do the first two first and give it a rest to see how it shakes out with an eye towards doing the rest 2 months later if the world doesn't end.

i would agree with splitting 2 strokes out, but i don't think they need their own sub forums for brand. I don't mind the name of thumpers or singles, doesnt' bother me either way. I do like splitting it between small and large bikes, but would prefer not to have split for brand.

Race-bred/Dual Citizen is too subjective. There will be piss fighting about which is which.

CC or brand or geography is defiined.

Agreed. 450EXC and 530 EXC are the same bike except for about three parts.

590cc +/- would probably be the least bad. Husaberg 570s go near KTMs where they belong, and XR600s go with XR650s where they kind of belong. Husky 610s and 630s go with each other, even though they could ride with either big or little bikes.

Brand split is better.

Putting the mega threads somewhere else is good though.
