Thumb Overland to China

I am in the very early stages of planning a trip to Beijing and could do with any words of wisdom that may be out there.

I'm off to Morocco in September for a couple of weeks on a gs1200 but will be looking for something smaller for the Beijing trip any ideas also appreciated...

So I take it you are aware of the special requirements by the Chinese, to book through a government-approved tour operator a guide to meet you up at the border, and handle all the paperwork for you, and travel with you during your stay there, all of which will cost you an astronomical sum of money, compared to how cheaply you can usually travel in most parts of Asia...?

(..and that its the only way to do China with your own foreign motorcycle these days?)
