Heidenau K60 Scout Fail

Just got this 150/70/17 Scout, mounted it up on the rim and tried to air it up and seat the bead. Big hole/crack in a brand new tire. Anybody ever seen this before? Sucks I am leaving Wed. to head to the GP in Austin.

what did you pump it up to to seat it...
the shop never did that step for me, so my front slow leaks about .1 bar per week. But looks like yours leaks more then that.

After looking at the photo again, could it be from a razor blade when someone removed the wrapping?
It looks like there's another cut just to the right of the big one.

Did you buy it from a shop or online?

If a shop, they might have cut it while unpacking it.

It's difficult to believe that something like that would have got past quality control, but I guess anything is possible.

Best of luck sorting it out so you can get your trip going on time.

No, definitely not right. I use this exact tyre/size on my bike and have on them about 2,000 miles of everything from tarmac to sharp rocky trails with no visible damage. At first sight I thought maybe you'd exceeded the beading pressure but a modern tyre would never burst like that - it looks like it was either damaged during transport or, like others mentioned, while having the packaging removed. In this case the carrier should cover it (or try to see if Heidenau will warranty it - their German website has a contact form, you can write in English, and they are very responsive in getting back by the next business day). Might be worthwhile to see what they have to say.

I got it from revzilla and they are taking it back no problem, I plan on finding a tire out in the austin area next week, I am pretty sure I can make it there. Tire was shipped in a box that I opened so no razor cut. The bead never even started to seat before I realized air was coming out of the hole.

Hmm one of those unsolvable mysteries in life... good you're getting a refund - good luck getting a new tyre sorted. For what it's worth, the K60 has been one of the best tyres I've ever come across for all-round ability.

Lone Star Cycle, local BMW and Triumph dealer, carries the K60. You may want to check with them and make sure they actually have one on the shelf in case they sold what was in stock. http://www.lonestarcycle.com/ Just be aware that they are closed Sunday and Monday.

Or PM me. I have a Harbor Freight tire stand and a good compressor. Come by the house and we can get it mounted at least. Balancing is another story.

I liked that comment about the razor blade. I think it would have to be some kind of razor blade! I think I could slice through the tread of a brand new K60 with a razor blade if I had about 30 minutes to do it. It would be kinda like chopping through a tree with a hatchet. It can be done--but not with a momentary slip of the wrist.

I stand corrected, I didn't realize we had the undisputable tire authority monitoring this thread.
Just think,a legend in his own mind.
