950/990 Adventure - Touring Tires

I am a newbie to 'Orange Crush', but after having read multiple tire threads, I still have a question in regard to finding the best tire for my needs. I need a rear tire that can run dirt/gravel roads and still perform awesome on high speed Tarmac runs, with a lot of mileage.......and handle 2-up touring weights.

Please respond to the poll, regarding the tire that has lasted you the most miles. If the tire lasted you over 5,000 miles, please write a respond with:

(Rear Tire Only)

-Brand
-Size (Really important to note, as there is a 140 and a 150 Heidenau.)
-Mileage
-other notes including riding conditions, load on the bike, etc.

Once again, only respond if the tire took you beyond 5,000 miles, but everyone respond to the poll, voting on the highest mileage you have attained on your ADV.

Thanks!

Heidenau K60 Scout Rear Tire M+S 150/70-18

lasts forever, I rode a return trip from Ontario to California on one tire and rode the rest of summer on what was left of it. I put something around 10,000 miles on it (lots of highway and some back-country roads).

They are not the greatest for mud.

I have Heidenaus K60s on my 950 Adv right now with 8k miles. Will probably get a couple more k out of them. They do well all around in sand, gravel, and rocks. My wife and I did 2 up 1800 miles in Moab and southern Co., half dirt. Most of the rest of overall mileage was street one up.

I ran this tire for at least 9000 k and it could go further. I ran a Shinko dual sport tire all the way across the country and back and could probably do the trip again on the same tire. Both these are good value. I put a continental on the rear once and it was finished after one weekend! The most expensive tire I had ever purchased and it did not last and was no good in dirt or on the highway.

2 rear Scorp last me 7500 miles each. Now Ive changed to k60 scout and with 4k wear is barelly noticiable.. I think I can get about 10k miles from this tire.

Mostly tarmac with some fireroads

I think it depends a lot of how you ride and where you ride. I try to ride as much as possible in the mid-west winters. I think you get very little wear on a tire in the cold. In blazing hot temps the tires wear down much more rapidly. Then, it's how much you twist the wrist.

Holy Cow!....The bike I purchased had a Scorpion on it with only 500 miles. I have put 1,000 miles on it and hope to get another 1,000.....if I am lucky. 2,500 tops on this tire.

900 miles was a ride from AZ to CO....sometimes at 80 mph.

No intentions to ever buy the tire.

Heidenau for sure. Worth every cent and is pretty beefy.

The last longer than any tire I have had on the 990.

Laugh Another Opinion

Heidenau K60 Scout front- great feel, great traction/braking in the wet or dry. The Pirelli Scorpion AT's wear fast and do NOT work offroad, esp in wet/mud.

Mefo Super Explorer rear. My 1st had almost 12k miles when I took it off, put on in Alaska, ridden home & for the rest of the year. Last one got just over 10k on it but that included some rocky "hillclimbs" and a lot more hooligan-throttle use. Almost 5k on the one on the bike now, barely shows wear and it's been offroad a good bit

Air pressures should be kept as high as you dare (I run 34ft/42rr) to keep carcass flex, thus temps, leading to (fast) wear to a minimum. Seriously, even a few PSI lower makes a huge differrence in tire temps... it's all over the forums where people air down when going off pavement and wear their tire visibly in short order

As for road-touring the Avon Distanzia work well. I know people using them for their 17"/17" supermoto setups and use them quite effectively offroad in anything other than mud & wet loam/grass

All the TKC's (esp the front) wear "square" pretty fast if used on the road, regardless of the pressure/temps. Plus the price used to be reasonable but now they cost as much as a premium tire. YMMV

I run a mefo rear on my 990. Its about 50/50 on and off road. Once it gets to about the half ware point I am not nice to it at all. Hard take offs and sliding around all the time and I still get more then 10,000 miles out of it. Just keep the tire presure between 25-30 all the time.

All you guys running the Heidenau......

Is anyone running the 140 tire?

I assume that most of you are running the 150, but I am curious about the 140 in regard to life and its ability to carry weight at high speeds and not get overly hot and wear faster or blowout.

We ran the 140's on our DR and got 13000 miles out of them with house and contents on board.

The 140 is the first tire size with the centre wear bar, everything smaller is open tread and do a lot less miles.

Now with Maya we have the 150 Heidi and love it, done so far about 9200 km or 5750 miles, we are currently in Belize, have organised a new one in Bogota but suspect we will still have good tread left there.

buddy of mine ran a 140 on the stock wheel. after 3k, the center was flat, and the bike handled odd since it was squared up. he said he wont do that again, and is currently running a 150.

I did 8,000mi on first Hidenau K60 rear, now have 8,000mi on the second and could easily do another 2,000mi all in South America. But I am in northern Brazil now and will change it for the remaining 8,000mi trip home. The front tire has not been changed since we got to South America, which means 16,000 miles.
