Deterrence by presence would be marked cars, no?

decoy cars,,

for years and years there was an old defunct black and white car parked near the middle of "town" at Beaver Marsh,,and for years and years it has slowed down passing traffic even though it is 30 yrs old, and OSP vehicles haven't been black and white since,,,well,,, ever!
It just plain works! You see it,,you automatically check yer speed and slow down. Unmarked vehicles are solely for revenue collection.
ride fast, take chances!

I don't remember where it was in Nevada, but a small town has a plywood cutout of a police car at the city limits. It does slow you down. It works and it is cost effective.

I think it was in Ocean Shores that they have a marked car with a dummy in it just as you come into the city limits. I almost asked said dummy for some local info.

Good thing no one saw me, I would have been embarrased.

No doubt about that.

From the time they're spotted, and until they're out of sight again, then its back to "normal"

.Wow, a whole mile of deterrence.

Does anybody have any personal anecdotes on this, or is it all straw man arguments?

Not sure what you're asking here. We've probably all been zipping along, and then either been forced to travel at/near the posted limit due to the officer who is visible. Parked along the side of the road, cruising at the speed limit, or writing a ticket- just the presence, and threat, cause us to adjust our behavior.
The threat of a ticket when no enforcement is visible seems slight, so we tend to act in violation of various codes. When the threat is plainly visible, we act legally.

Well that seems like the perfect argument in favor of undercover enforcement., it makes folks think twice before letting it all hang out. I,m on the road 8 to 10 hours a day, and I have only seen them a couple of times, chances are slim of actually getting dinged by one, but we're thinking about it.

I don't see how that isn't a deterrence.

Invisible officers are less a deterrent, save to the unfortunate few that get lit up. Visible officers are a deterrent to all.

Something different

I know of a stretch of road that was regularly travelled at 20+ over, by most everyone using it. The state got a wild hair and rigged up RADAR to randomly shoot from the light standards. X, K, Y, laser, the whole alphabet was being shot, at no-one in particular. All of the sudden, everybody's detectors were lighting up like a speed trap was ahead, so they all slowed down. This coupled with regular speed-enforcement has slowed the traffic to where everyone is seemingly happy.

Not that I agree or disagree, just a funny/different way of going about it.
