Woodpeckers

Any of you FF's have any idea how to get rid of these things. I have one that is destroying my house. I have tried to hit him with a bb gun but the little fucker is hard to hit. I filled the hole he made, and he came back and promptly reopened it.

I am about to take the 12 gauge out in the front yard and end this little fuckers miserable existence, and then promptly be visited by the local leo for discharging a firearm in the city limits.

I guess I could call the local exterminators, but that is admitting the little fucker has won the battle.

This problem kept ACME in business for a few years but the coyote never did get Woody

A good pellet gun would do the trick but could also make more holes to fill if you miss.

I know metal doesn't stop them. I was at a gas station and heard a hirrible racket. Looked around a little bit and found a woodpecker trying to hammer a hole in a metal light housing for the parking lot.

I am thinking about hanging one of those sticky rat traps over the hole and letting him try to peck through that. Kind of cruel, but it is getting ridiculous.

The little fucker will not take the hint and leave.

The pecker hitting the metal was looking for a mate. That is how they attract attention from the opposite sex.

A regular snap trap will work as well. More humane.

Yep. There's a flicker that hammers on the metal at the top of our chimney every morning. He must have one hell of a headache, because he's been at it for weeks now without success in getting the girl.

This looks like it could be fun and sporting at the same time.

Careful...

Migratory Bird Act applies to woodpeckers and game officials have some latitude in dealing with those who harrass and kill them.

Have you considered strips of metallized Mylar from the eaves where he insists on hammering? Slight weight on the end and 2-3 ft long should be random and disturbing enough to encourage a different location.

How about hanging a suet block in a flavor woodpeckers like? Put it out in the yard and they'll go eat that rather than your house.

If the woodpeckers are drilling into your house, you may have an insect problem.

I took care of a few with a scoped .22 cal air rifle. They seem to like corners so it's easy to get clean shot w/o putting holes in the house. They also seem to spook easy, but just fly to the nearest tree, which helps.

^ This. You get caught killing woodpeckers and you could go to jail and face a big fine.

And this.

You have borer beetles or a serious roach problem for woodie to have a reason to be attracted to your house.

Those god damn things bore holes into my stucco. Big gray ones we have here. I've shot a couple of them with my home defender youth 870 20 gauge, but they are skittish you gotta be ready for war when you hear them thumping on the house. I'm outside city limits so can shoot which is nice. I know you're not supposed to shoot them but I have 20,000 bucks into my siding so screw those birds. You can't scare them away enough.

1000 feet per second pellet gun. Silent and deadly.

Not necessarily. If they are destroying the trim and putting long rows of holes, then yeah, they're after insects. But, if they are boring out a large round hole, they're trying to make a home. They like the typical wooden columns on porches as they are essentially just small hollow trees. Perfect home sites for them.
