broken part found in engine, 1978 xl250s

This part was found laying in side case when changing cam chain. It is cast steel/iron (magnetic) with the only machining a slight bit on the end of the 2 opposing sides. No signs of wear or polishing so it does not appear that it was under much force. I have removed the valve cover and both side cases and can not located the original location. Any idea? Maybe from inside tranny? http://tomgabi.zenfolio.com/p96790028

That's a tip off of one of the shift forks. To replace that part means the engine has to come completely apart.

The bike's over 30 yrs old , if it was working fine before you found the piece it may continue to work for a long time. Keep that in mind ,but if you can't live with it at least make sure the part is available before you tear into it.

According to Cheapcycleparts only one of the three shift forks are still available. This is for a 79 as they don't list the 78

E-Bay, $25.00
