Present Road Conditions -- Western N.C.

I am going thru major mountain withdraw right now down here in Flat Florida.
The boss needs me to take a few days off in April to help the budget situation so I am wanting to head up to the Deals Gap, Cherohala, Blue Ridge Parkway region and ride. However, I was hoping to get some possible local recon on road conditions before I headed up there. Right now 4/10 thru 4/13 is my first window and then 4/24 thru 4/27 is my second. I will be riding my 2011 Speed Triple.

With all of the snow up there recently are there still water and mud debris creeping onto the roadways creating hooligan hazards?

Many thanks for any data anyone can throw in.

The BRP is blocked in most of the high elevations. Still has ice/snow and debris.

The Cherohala and surrounding areas are fine.

I would put off the trip till late April at least so you can access the BRP. Or just ride on the main roads and get on the BRP where you can. There is a BRP closure map on line.

I'm putting off my trip till the southern end of the parkway is open. I haven't gone up to Pisgah in a couple years, I rather wait till it all opens up this year.

Thanks Sagedrifter,

You have confirmed my fears and from what you have provided and what I have been able to gather with the NCDOT website I think the end of April will be better.

Part of my plan is the BRPW from Cherokee thru about the Grand Father Mt. area. Not worth it to have to dodge the closures.

Thanks again.

Here is a video I shot in May 2011 when I was in the area that will help remind all just how beautiful the Parkway and the Smokies are.

We are finally hitting the 70 temp range so things should be getting better fast.

I'm watching the weather close, my gear is all in the corner of my bedroom packed and ready for a week long trip up to that area. I lived north of Morganton near Lineville Gorge years ago, I love that area.

Highway 181........

I took my new GSA up to that area in late November (Thanksgiving) of 2011 and the weather was still good at that point. There was ice along the sides of the road in the high places along the BRPW. I hiked up Table Top Mt and then headed down to Morgantown for the night before heading back to flat Florida.

Here are some pics of just how beautiful it still was up there that late in the year (and how beautiful my GSA was)
