Glad you decided not to cut it up. I hate to see a nice bike hacked up.

That "box" under the engine is to balance the exhaust system. My Vulcan 750 has one. Many owners remove it to make more noise, but lose power in the process. Any aftermarket exhaust is going to be noticeably louder than stock. I know someone with a Vulcan 750 he put Vance&Hines Cruzers on, it's pretty loud with the baffles. Sounds a lot like a Harley at low speeds, but the high rpms at highway speeds kills the sound, makes it sound like a chainsaw. The Vulcan engine is a seriously oversquare high rpm design, the Harley is a long stroke, undersquare low rpm design. Don't know what the specs are on the V535.

I'm thinking of using that exhaust wrap on the main "front" pipe. The rest of the exhaust has beauty plates over it and wrapping it, I think, would look weird. Can I get header wrap by the foot anywhere? Like at an autoparts store?

Yeah, the big chain stores like O'Reilly, Advance, and AutoZone sometimes keep it in house.

Who says he would have hacked it?

I love seeing all bikes cut up and improved, from cafe's to streetfighters and all in between. Done well, ALL bikes can be improved with the addition of the human touch.

FTF FTW

Mikesova, Just wanted to add that I really like your choice in handlebars. Those Z's are sweet. IMHO, miles better than the first choice.

Thanks. I preferred the 90 degree angles, but they are tougher to find in 7/8".

I'm going to mount them up raw at first, but I'll probably end up painting them black or silver. It might be kind of cool to paint them an accent color like red possibly.

I was poking around MC Superstore today, I think whitewall Shinko 777's will be right up my alley:

Yeah, it drives me nuts that people do hack up motorcycles and spray paint perfectly good plastics/tank flat black and then try to sell it as though they added value to them. That is not me.

My dad who has gotten really into 70s Suzuki GTs really HATES the cafe craze right now. So many mutilated sub frames and fenders...

Simpler lighter pipes will give you louder pipes.

My first street bike was an early '70s GT380. Loved it. Like so many other great bikes I've had, I wish I had it back.

Whitewalls are gonna look cool with the bars.
Gonna look a little brat-like, but with a 50's vibe.

I pulled the faceplate and knob off the petcock and cleaned some gunk out of it (while on the tank still), then flushed some kerosene through it. I think I'm going to pull the fuel pump off and soak it as well. Couldn't hurt. Now, I'm planning on checking/adjusting the valves before I try firing it up, should I change the oil, too? Is the existing fuel filter still ok? I'm going to flush the bad gas out of the carb end of the fuel line, but should I replace the filter or will it be ok?

Here's some pics for the hell of it.

The z-bars shipped yesterday, I'm pysched to see what they look like on it.

Another issue I'm having is trying to justify in my head owning, registering, and insuring another bike. I try to be practical with this impractical hobby. ;) I started out the year with 2 street legal bikes: My KLX250s for dual sporting and my FZ6 for sport touring/commuting/daily riding. Then my wife decided she was going to take the MSF class this spring, so I found a nice little T-dub for her in February and have it ready to go. Now with this one, I'm looking at insuring and plating 4 bikes. I actually didn't think the process would be going as fast as it is on this one, but once I have something going in the garage, I can't leave well enough alone.

Definitely change the fuel filter.

That's a nice looking little bike, bro. It'll ease the pain of registration and whatnot to have it completed and take it for a ride.

I would predict that, like me, once you get an old shitbox running you'll be bombarded with purchase offers. I don't even post bikes on here anymore, nor do I talk about what I'm wrenching on because someone always leaves me with cash and rides my fun off.
I can't ride dollars!

So, your bike dilemma will probably resolve itself in due time.
