Good point. I can't seem to find decent used XR250's in my area. A couple of XR400's but that's maybe a little too much?

for ~ $100 you can pick up a 'lowering link' and drop seat height ~ 1.5" if necessary

Don't worry - his 200lbs will take the seat height down to 32" in no time!

I'm serious here! I'm only 180lbs and a WR250R compresses at least 3 inches when I sit on it. I can pretty much flatfoot it!

I had a spot of trouble with an old DR 350 and was offered my buddy's XR250 (with an A-line tank kit and some upgrades) for the day. I reluctantly took him up on the offer. Nothing like having a group of people waiting for you while you kick your bike 50 times. In any case, it was a total blast. I threw that thing around and had a blast. Sure, I had to go nearly wide open out of the turns to keep up with the boys, but seriously, I had a hoot.

I have an XR400 and it is an anvil but is dead reliable and easy to start. Any of those old, air cooled lumps will suit you so much better than a new, de-tuned motocross version of an F-1 motor. A DR-Z 400 or a DR 350, you'll have a great time while you learn.

I'm happy you have a good set of boots.

It's true that despite my 32", my 200lbs seem to help once I sit on the bike.
On most dirtbikes I have sat on (including KTM's 250s and 300's), despite having an intimidating seat height, I was able to touch the ground quite comfortably.
I have never played with my bikes' geometry and I would start doing this either.
I guess several of my questions will be answered when I take the riding lessons (they provide the bikes).

I recently become a certified dirt riding instructor... and one of the things they taught us is that taller seats are better because of ground clearance. As long as you can hold the bike up with one leg when stopped, that's fine. One of the instructors that taught us is 72 yo and has been riding for longer than I've been alive... he's about 5'3 and he can ride a super tall KTM just fine. He'll stand next to it, give it throttle and get it rolling, THEN mount it once moving. And when stopping, he'll get off before it stops.

Now, I wouldn't necessarily want to try that as a new rider, but after you get good and want a more capable bike, keep that in mind.

It sure depends on what kind of dirt riding you do, or want to do.
I always liked faster dirt riding, but had a friend who would rather strap a bike on his back and climb over and through things.

I say get any bike you can get a good deal on, lighter is better, and ride.
Once you know what turns you on, you can resell the bike for little to no loss and pick something better.

Its all fun to me, anything from a small street bike with dual sport tires to something like an xt225 or crf230L, or a TW200, or a 250cc motocross bike.
You really can not have fun dirt riding if you do not get in over your head.

A big heavy bike in very rough tight stuff is not a lot of fun, but it is when you get to the wide open dirt roads.

A TW200 is not much fun on a motocross track, but its fun in thick sand and swamps. You get to laugh at all the guys pushing their bikes...

As I like speed, I tend to like lower bikes, lower center of gravity, shorter distance to fall from, able to dab no matter what.
Rocks, logs, jumps, go tall.

Reliable bikes:
tw200, crf230l/250L, xt225, dr350, dr650, wr250, really, any dual sport from the Japanese for the last 30 years.
I hear some euro brand models are not too bad.

But really, I have had fun on a cb350 with knobbies on it..

Yamaha had a demo where I was riding this weekend. I rode a wr450, It handled great in the singletrack loop. the power was easy to control, the suspension was soft, but that could be easily dealt with, it changed direction very easily, and felt very light. This is from someone that only rides 2strokes. I bought a brand new Drz in 03 rode it for a few years and now ride only single track, the Wr450 is by far a better bike. It gets my vote.

A stock wr450 is detuned from the factory to %50 or %60 of its potential output..There is even a throttle stop on the slide.I read somewhere that off the show toom floor a 2010 bike made 19 rwhp.Some minor mods got it to 40+.But if a noob left the bike stock it would last along time + have some room for rider skill improvement.
