Trinidad to Salida and a flat tire eats up some time..

That Monday we did several hours of dirt through picturesque rolling foothills.

The Spanish Peaks come into view and stay with you for at least an hour. The road was gentle and curvy. There was a great old church that was abandoned.
We speculated that long ago people were married in this quiet Valley. Funerals, too and baptisms. After Gardner We continued on dirt of a ways then hopped on the hiway as the clouds turned dark and the wind picked up. The Sangre de Christo mountains on our left we hurried through the chilled air. Pretty tired we pulled in for gas and for me to look at the maps. As we streched, a crusty local informed Richard that his KLR had a flat. He had just been saying how the bike was bogging down. Well this was one of my dreaded scenarios on our trip, but with a gorgeous view of the mountains, a Subway reastaruant, bathrooms, plenty of ice and water it was about as ideal as a flat could be. They even let us use and old milk crate to raise the bike up.

We casually ate sammiches and then switched out the tube. Took us about 40 minutes top swap tube. A marked improvement from my first fumbling attempts that ooh 6 hours and I pinched the tube.
Pulling into Salida just a few minutes to late to get my package from inmate HayDuke @ FAT Tees. doh! We settled on a youth hostel and were practically the only ones there. There was a communal guitar that felt good on my hands as I stumbled through a few songs. The town was great, with lots of cool outdoorsy shops and more than a couple good places to eat. A very healthy active population lives here. There was one weird guy at hostel who grumbles, doesn't have a car and has figured out all the freebies around. He talked loudly on phone in the bathroom. Why is he here? he is not traveling, he doesn't have any mode of transportation. Just odd. Next day got gear from Hayduke, got my crap mailed back home and headed out... a bit later than we liked, but the first pass (hancock) was snowed in anyways so we had to slab the next portion anyway so we'd have some time.....I thought anyway.....

Mathew:

Your video today (reply #156) is the best I've ever seen on the TAT. It was like reliving every day again. Great shots..keep it up. I hope the full length version is available in the future.
Thanks for all your efforts,
Doug

If you put together a full length video of that quality, I'll sure as hell buy a copy!

Bluhduh onward from Salida

We headed west From Salida and looking forward to our big day of mountain passes or at least getting to Lake City so we'd be as close as possible and ready for the next day of Cinnamon, California Etc.

But the higher we got the slower we seemed to go. At 10,000 feet Richard is shaking his head and pulls over.

He had the jetting adjusted before the trip. But we figured they can only guess when adjusting at lower altitude as far as fine tuning it. I had inserted a brand new Pre-Oiled No Toil Filter and my bike was running great. But the Filter I had pulled out of my DRZ was really pretty bad. Richard looked at his K&N filter and it was pretty bad too. No Problem! We have a brand new No Toil for him to use!! But then we realized the little frame that supports filter was not there because it's not necessary with K&N. So, the new filter might just get sucked in the air hole. Enter MacGyver engineering. Travis runs on caffeine in similar portions to our gas mileage, so he had a Monster energy can that we fashioned to hold folder in place. We we back on track in no time but after 20 yards Richard was shaking his head again.

Crappity Crap Crap.

We limped up Monarch Pass and then obviously it was easier going down the back side. Since Richard's KLR was essentially non-functionining at altitude we had to get ti to a Mechanic. The TAT was now just to our South but we had to get bike worked on and the next shop was in Gunnison. So we spent the next 3 hours or so waiting around. Then the weather got really windy and rainy.

Sun Sports Unlimited wrked on the bike as I tried to figure our options...
