tips for packing muffler

i been packing mufflers on my bikes for about 35 years or so and never had much problems with blowing out packing very much till now. i know its probably the muffler design of the supertrapp superlight muffler i have but any good tips on how to prolong the packing? i even used steel wool for the first few rounds of wrap then fmf 4stroke packing over that. fmf pillow pink stuff blows out really fast too.

Tried it years ago. Had a Maico 490 that would just pulverise the packing in no time. I packed the steel wool in with a piece of wood and a mallet. Still did'nt last. Went to a solid tube. LOUD , but everything likes some backpressure to some extent. I think the pink FMF spaghetti looking stuff is supposed to be good.

so the steel wool lasted longer than fiberglass?

It lasted a little longer than the fluffy wool stuff , but not much. Big pistons just pound the packing to death. The original stuff in my FMF Titanium-4 has held up well , but I don't know which of their replacements it might be. It's pretty dense and you can slide it in and out like a firm fiberglass tube.

thanks, yea the stock stuff that come in some of the aftermarket mufflers are pretty good.

Ever thought of putting some steel mesh/gauze in the back of the muffler to keep the packing in?

You need to pack them really tight and it'll be louder than glass - the good news, cheap enough and easy to handle at least.

no havent tried that yet but i did put a lot of steelwool in the back to try to keep the fiberglass from blowing out too fast. the fiberglass packing is ok but i notice when i get a little gap in the rear from some packing being blown out the muffler sounds different and doesnt have the nice fresh sound anymore. i can go about 3 or 4 hundred miles and i can tell the difference already. i know just ride! but still looking for a good solution.

Ive never packed a muffler unless the stinger on my old baja bug counts. Could some of you guys that do this post some pics. I will be making an exhaust system that will include a muffler and could really use some visual aids.

Stainless commercial grade pot scrubbers are convenient because they are rolled up like a doughnut. Just slip the center hole over the core and stack them up.

Another more costly solution is Fiberfrax, which is wool made from a refractory mineral. It won't burn out or melt and should be packed as tightly as possible.

Question

Vance & Hines Cruzer pipes use sheets of what looks like dryer lint as baffle packing. This is not only $20 a year that blows out the pipes, but that dryer lint doesn't "baffle" anything worth a squat. Stove rope, however, is woven fiberglass rope impregnated with graphite good to 1,000 F. Instead of wrapping the V&H baffle, I wrapped a set of Smart Partz add-on baffles with 5/8" flat stove rope. Funny thing, the bike is quieter and the stove rope doesn't really wear out. It did stretch some in the first 20-odd miles; my fault for not wrapping 'em tightly enough.

I don't have a clue how you'd get stove rope to work on a Supertrap, but it might work! The seven-foot length of 5/8" rope I bought was at Ace Hardware for $5.
