Stopped for lunch on the way back from the RA, BYOB and 1400 miles of running NC, VA and WV mountain roads - with one full day in a driving rain the soaked right through the rain liner in my KTM (Dianese made) jacket and the dry bag for my sleeping bag and everything in the Paniers was bone dry.

Thanks Kirk!

Here's a pretty interesting idea...

Phreakingeek had the idea of a top box that has a removable extension piece. Hmmm... I think I can pull that off.

Design criteria? 4" without extension. 10" with.

Base going together.

6" extension piece.

Lid fab.

Without extension.

Pretty neat idea!

Maybe more to see tomorrow...

I love the concept. It could be done on side cases as well!

awesome

Well Kirk,

You continue to take a crazy idea and turn it into reality. I dont know how, but you always manage to make it better than I imagined it. Cant wait to see more of this one coming together.

Decals

Sure like what you're doing here! Next bike.......

I have a suggestion for decals, if you still haven't pulled the trigger on the real fancy domed ones (which I really like). A lot of equipment that I work on uses lexan decals that we spec thusly:

1. Material to be GE .010 Velvet Matte Finish Lexan Polycarbonate Film.
2. Transfer to be subsurface screen processed with Techmar MTS UV or equivalent.
3. UV INhibitor Additive p/n Tinuvin 1130 or equivalent.
4. 3M 9672 Laminating Adhesive.
5. Split Backing Paper.

Most decal places seem to be able to work with that spec.

These don't have any "dome" to them, but they are really durable, and hold up in the sun for quite a few years. We have used them on dash panels, and the .010" lexan is thick enough that we can have holes in the metal dash for optional rocker switches, and just let the decal cover the hole if that option isn't installed.

If you want to see what they look like, I suppose Ditch Witch equipment (where I learned about it) still uses them--if you have a dealer around there you could take a look.

Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the kind words and the info. I have yet to order the decals. Maybe soon...

Here you go, Jeff,

I hope you like the completed photos as well!

Lift-off hinges so that the lid fits onto both sections.

Keyed-alike Protex latches.

Hinges are a heavy-duty composite plastic with stainless steel pins.

Price point to be determined because I'm still looking for a bulk distributor of the hinges. Expect it to be 1/2 of KP-3 pricing + a bit extra.

You saw it here first. When you see Jeff's awesome idea duplicated elsewhere, you know where it came from.

Whew! That made my brain hurt a little. ;)

That"s a very clever design. I would like to see pics of that top box mounted on bike.
