Motorcycle Winch?

I'm in the market and trying to figure out what is best. Any insights or model recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

A couple hours of digfing out of a mud hole yesterday was the tipping point.

What's your preference - by hand or battery? Warn makes a dedicated moto winch and two vendors (CJ Designs and BlackDog Cycle Works) make rear luggage racks compatible (may need to get additional hardwar) with it for mounting

There's also a cheaper winching system with some pulleys and ropes.

Don't even know where to start with this kernel of truth.

Very true... My most of my brethren spend more time tricking out their bikes than working out their bikes.

Warn XT 17.

I and others have them on our 9XX and I'm wiring mine up for my 690.

What most people don't realize is the winch isn't just for being stuck in the mud but also if you should fall over by yourself. Makes righting the bike so much easier without unloading if you're on a trip. Cheaper then a couple of trips to your Chiropractor.

I made a 9 to 1 mechanical advantage pulley system with rock climbing ropes, pulleys,... Got a chance to test it today in mudy and snowy ATV tracks on the big katoom.

If you need a wintch to pick up your bike man, u r either on the wrong bike or the wrong place.

Yup, I ride alone, no cell phones, AAA and not just in fair weather. With my winch I never wonder if I should go look or not..............I just go!

Block and Tackle

I carry a block and tackle along with extra rope in case I need to extend the reach of the pulley system. I have had to use it a couple of times, once when fully loaded and the only issue was that I had to unload the bike to make it lighter. That was a small price to pay to get out of a difficult spot. The other suggestion I would make is irrespective of what winch system you choose to go with, try it out before you need it to make sure you can work it on your own. Cheers, David

With respect to the Warn XT 17 winch, what is everyone's take on the two options: handlebar mounted switch or remote switch? (I now see they have a wireless option, too, but I am more curious on the first option.)

Thoughts? Opinions?
