Custom Helmet... Clear coat advice?

Anyone having experience with clear applying clear coats, I’d appreciate some advice. I had a friend at work (the art teacher) do a custom helmet paint job. I am pretty happy with the outcome, especially since it was on the “bro” hookup price. I just want to preserve it… at least a little. I know that within a few rides there will be dings here and there… most of the art is in paint marker, some in sharpie.

Paul (Pablo83) already mentioned having an idea for the clear coat, but I just thought I’d see there were any paint experts out there… Pics below.

That's pretty wicked right there.
I would be very wary of what type of clear-coat you put on there cause the wrong one may cause the sharpie to bleed.

See if you can contact this guy: http://www.pinstripechris.com/sharpiecars

I'm sure he knows a thing or 2 about clear-coating sharpie

I emailed pinstripe-chris, I'll be curious to see if he responds. Thanks for the link - my artist buddy has done sharpie and paint marker to his car, but since he paints over it a couple times a year he doesn't worry about the preservation...

Nice art work. It might be too nice; I wonder if people will think you just got it from the dealer that way.

As far as clear coat goes, you can borrow one of my helmets and use some sharpie on it and try and clear it to see if it will run.

HMM gives me a bad idea. would a white sharpie work to re-pinstripe the tank on my Guzzi Eldorado?

Subscribed to hear what the outcome of clear coating this might be.

I got a little more clarification from the artist - he didn't use Sharpie and Paint Marker - he used a Sharpie Paint Marker! Like this: http://www.sharpie.com/enus/pages/oi...nt-marker.aspx

Just a heads up - the reducers in some (auto) paints can potentially degrade the EPS foam in the helmet. If you clear coat that helmet I would work fast, and keep it extremely well ventilated. A couple coats of clear probably won't compromise the safety of the helmet, but it is worth taking extra precautions. You only get one head

Nice helmet art BTW

You're current avatar is awesome, but a zoomed-in photo of your helmet portrait would be an even awesomer avatar.

Also, you should give your tracker to your artist buddy and pay him to do a matching paint job. In fact, ask him what he would charge to paint a bike for me (tank and tail section).

Well I ordered up a couple of those pens and we shall see how they work for pin striping. What the heck, the tank on the Guzzi is ugly now anyway.

Whatever I do on the tracker paint job, I don't know if I can paint over the Yeti sticker... it's like your helmet... when you buy something that awesome second-hand, it almost has to be part of the "soul" of the object.

I agree. This is on the rear fender of the old Guzzi I just got. If I ever repaint it the sticker has to stay. Of course no one here is old enough to remember Harry's Motors

Pics are a MUST.

And, Paul, I'll ask the artist about interest in future work and rates... I think it was actually a team effort with his daughter - he sketched out some stuff and she did most of it on the helmet.

I hadn't noticed the Yeti sticker before. That's a perfect mascot for an ice racing bike. I like Marc's idea: mask the sticker and paint the rest.

BTW, I like your new avatar.

I wonder if a 2 part urethane clear in a spray can would be the thing. Should be durable, called Spray Max, can get it from Eastman, rather toxic.

Is there any chance that the solvent/chemicals in paint or clear coating would deteriorate or harm the structural integrity of the helmet?
