I'd be more worried about the chemicals/vapors eating/weakening the foam inside and not the shell itself. I'd cling wrap and tape the foam inside. Then likely stuff something in the cavity and tape around that.

After talking to the chemist at Sherwin Williams (aka my cousin) - without having started from a primer, the whole thing is basically going to be fragile. So, he thought the best place to start would be just to buy $3 can of aerosol - as glossy as possible = higher durability. Otherwise, just use paint marker to fix damage.

So, I bought a can of Krylon Crystal Clear - applied some paint marker to an old helmet, sprayed a few layers and now we waits.... and drinks a beer while were waiting.
