First track day on an airhead - postscript

Well, it's done - got through my first weekend at the track on my R75/5. The old bike got a lot of smiles, and got to rev a whole lot higher than normal. Mostly a great experience, couple of small bummers. My camera died on day 1, and my front tire went flat mid-way through day 2. Oh, and the tach needle flew off and rattled around inside the glass, guess it wasn't used to all those revs, good thing I know this bike well enough to match speed and RPMs. Otherwise the bike held up very well, with nothing more than a few fresh scrapes on the valve covers. Kept up with the novice sport bikes in the turns and even passed a few coming out of turns, but mostly tried to set up clear track with a hot pit.

When I do it again, I'll bring a couple spare tubes (it's hard on the valve stem) and a spare set of valve covers, seriously worried I'd grind a hole while learning the lines and better body position to keep the cylinders up. Will also look at better rear suspension and thicker front oil. If you get a chance to bring your old airhead to a track weekend, go for it, it's a blast to see what these things can do.

Have you ever read/seen the BMW ON article "Airheads & Fast Guys" Nov 2005?

You'd appreciate it.

Nope. If someone has a link to an online copy, I'd like to.

If there are other airheads in the southeast who want to do a weekend this year, the US Desmo guys will be at Roebling Road in GA the last weekend in Oct. Laid-back, mostly older crowd, about half Ducatis and Brit bikes and half asian bikes, and as long as you can pass tech you can ride with them. There was a decent guy on a 73 Triumph in Novice and another on a 125cc Honda 2-stroke in the intermediate group that was fast as hell until he crashed it.

I would be interested in the late October track day at Roebling. I race a vintage Beemer in AHRMA and have a few more Airhead street bikes. Do you have contact info for the US Desmo guys?

Awesome. I've been threatening to take mine around a track for a couple of years - Maybe this summer.
