I'll be picking up a 800GS next Tuesday, and they're looking for a low-frame 650GS for wife, so we'll probably be exploring the Uwharrie. Not real familiar with the area yet. We live just south of Laurinburg, NC. Info would be much appreciated.

The FS roads are fine for the larger DS bikes but be very careful if you plan to go on the OHV trails. They are extremely rocky and have some nice hill climbs. Just make sure you have engine guards. Most, if not all of the trails are two way and are shared with ATVs, side by sides and Jeeps. You did need to purchase a daily OHV pass from one of the nearby stores for $5 if you are going on the OHV trails.

I'd like to know how the ride went. I'm on a 1200GS, and have wondered how the trails @ Uwh were. You mentioned FS roads... how long are they, and is there a good map out there? I'm in Mint Hill, NC, and would love to start riding over there. I haven't found any good DS roads. Thanks for any info.!

I hit every trail on my 1150GS and only had one "OH SH*T WHAT WAS I THINKING" moment on a trail called Daniel. Uwharrie is ok on a big bike if it's dry. (WARNING) very slick when it's wet!! red clay. I ride an XRL now and enjoy the trails much more. I feel it's worth the trip for you to hit most if not all the trails and FS roads. Get a map at the Eldorado outpost (the BP) pay the fee and have a great time.

You want this map:

http://www.cs.unca.edu/nfsnc/recreat..._trail_map.pdf

Like a dumbass, on my first visit to Uwharrie I tried to go up Daniel first - and got tossed off on my arse within the first 100 yards or so of the trail. Consulting the map afterwards, I decided to start on something easier (Wolf Den) - worked much better.
