Going for the Millions!
April 6th, 2013 was a good riding day. Well, just about every day is a good riding day... but some are just wetter or colder than others. The temperatures were very comfortable today running in the low 80s and the skies were clear, so we decided to work on our 2013 scavenger hunt. Also, our Mega Millions lottery ticket had just expired so we needed to get a new one. We always keep a valid ticket on hand because your odds of winning the lottery without a ticket are fairly low - LOL. We get a single quick pick number that is good for 26 consecutive draws allowing us to go about a month and a half in between ticket runs. Alabama doesn't have the lottery but Georgia does, so we have to go there for our ticket.
As you can see in the map below, we started in Centreville (A) and rode over to Rockford (B) to see the grave of Fred, the town dog. From there we headed to Auburn (C) to try to find a statue of a tiger and then over the Lanett (D) to see little Nadine Earle's grave. Lanett is on the Georgia line so it was a perfect place to buy a new lottery ticket.
The ride from Centreville to Rockford was great. We took 82 and 22 all the way, both are 2 lane roads that pass through some neat little towns and even takes you right past a dam on the Coosa River. There wasn't a place to stop to get a picture of the dam, so our apologies for there not being one. Once in Rockford, we stopped at the little convenience store at the 4 way stop in town and got a Nehi Peach drink. After thoroughly enjoying that ice cold beverage, we went behind the old jail to see Fred's grave. It was fancier than we thought it would be and a picture is shown below.
We continued on 22 over to Alexander City where we hopped on 280 towards Auburn. 280 is a 4 lane road but traffic was light today, thank goodness. We turned off of 280 to head to the university and over to the stadium area. We had the impression there were tiger statues all over the place but that is not so. We finally found one tucked behind a gate at the stadium, so we rode through the gate and snapped a picture. Cynthia thought we would get a ticket for going in the gate, but I figured since it was open it was OK. We made it in and out of the gate without anyone noticing and we got the picture we needed.
We stopped at Chipoltle and had lunch. While there, we spotted a street sign with my real first name on it... this is one of the items on our scavenger hunt checklist. We snapped a couple of pictures, but couldn't get one without some kids being in the shot. Oh well, they were in a public place with no expectation of privacy so we posted the shots below. We have no idea who they are, just random kids at Auburn University.
We headed up the interstate to Lanett to see Nadine Earle's grave. Her grave is unique in that it is a little brick doll house built in the cemetery. Her parents are buried just outside her little house in ordinary graves. After taking several pictures at the cemetery, we headed across the state line and bought our Mega Millions ticket. We cashed in our old ones for a massive $4 payout... ahh, there's nothing like being a winner, LOL. We took pictures of the state lines as that is on our scavenger hunt checklist as well. I think we checked off 6 things on today's ride. You can see the full checklist on this page.
We hopped back on the interstate and made our way home, stopping by Victoryland to take a picture. All in all, we rode a little over 300 miles today and had a great time. Our butts got a little sore but that is to be expected. The Spyder is a comfortable ride but it sure is nice to stop for a butt stretch every now and then. We're looking forward to our next riding day to check off some more things on our 2013 Personal Ride Challenge Scavenger Hunt.
