EvilClown taking notes on how to get a highway project done for a change...

We made it through without a hitch....until Mike decided it was time to perform a little maintenance on the bike....why not?

How about 'why?' Maybe 00:55 will give us a hint...

I can't believe we missed this, considering our rigorous pre-flight inspections...

Hmmmm

I think he missed the chain...

Yeah. When I think about the sweepers we were railing through all afternoon before that I think I'm fairly fortunate.

Lesson learned. Might not be a bad isea to pack a cotter pin or two, either.

It's ok...we had duct tape.

Mike got his chain back on, tightened up the wheel, there were no broken or missing parts, and in the end we got off completely unscathed. While this wasn't the most convenient place for a wheel to come loose...it wasn't the worst either.

We came across this hut earlier in the day that I found to be interesting. Not sure if it's a temporary shelter or someone's permanent home. Actually, these were fairly common to see.

At some point during the afternoon, we decided to try to push on to Banos for the evening, but it was gonna be a stretch to get there.

I seem to recall you got my chain back on.

"I'll get it, Mike. You just stand over there out of the way and keep clapping your hands so I know where you are..."

I remember it as a joint effort, and the only reason I was involved at all is because I'm a pushy, know-it-all bitch mechanic, who has a hard time watching someone else fix stuff.

Warning.....Warning.....Warning....

This is a long video, not a video for the ADHD crowd. I call it "Lost in Latacunga" because we were lost in Latacunga.

At first I thought it was just a boring video, and to most it may be... but then I got thinking about it, and realized it's what riding in Latin America is all about. While it looks like there's no real controls and it's every man, woman, dog and kid for himself, actually it shows there is a huge amount of courtesy and anticipation for other drivers and pedestrians. An enormous amount of humanity keeps on flowing with relatively few rules, signs, lights, or controls, and with relatively few problems. Notice the lack of horn blowing, finger pointing, and anger that you would likely see in a North American city for instance. Almost all the "beeps" you do hear are "courtesy" beeps, just letting somebody know you're here. Everybody knows the program and goes with the flow...Just my take....Makes me wonder why...

We're trying to find the elusive Pan American highway...we crossed over it and didn't even know it. Eventually we found it though, with a little help.

Good points.

My observation is people in Latin American can drive - and do. Unlike here where driving has become a secondary (or lesser) task while in a car.

BTW, broke my 01:39 rule and watched the whole thing.

Now where's that flying dog video?

[/QUOTE]

I can't find the freaking thing...I was sure the go-pro was going...It was before we got on the PanAmerican wasn't it?

Update: Finally found the vids from that time frame, and I don't have the flying dog video which I'm very bummed about. I shut the gopro down just in time to miss it entirely. Sometimes I lost track of whether I was turning the darn video on... or off, because that's what you do all the time and my short term memory is crap.

So we found the commuter lane, even though we didn't have the required... triple occupancy...

We finally broke outa Latacunga and straddled the Pan American Highway south for awhile

Nothing fun about that...but we did get to see some interesting highway maintenance along the way...
