My rendition:

Sometime in the middle of the night, the first night there...I was awoken by a huge bang. This wasn't a typical bang as bangs in the night go, this was a serious bang, followed by another bang just like it...then some more.

I said to Mike, "what the hell was that"?
Mike says, "must be a thunder shower"
"Never heard thunder like that" I says

I get up to look outside..."it's not raining"

No response....snore...

The snoring was probably drowning out the volcano.

What do you do if you wake up and right outside your door is an erupting volcano?

pffft...

Not us.

We grab our cameras and head to the water slide!

Reaching the top platform we get a better view...

Everything along the way is coated in a sand-like ash...

As we stand there in amazement, the ash continues to shower down on us like a light misty snow.

Seeing a live volcano has been on my list forever. This is pretty freaking cool in my book - unless it goes Pompeii on us.

We watch for a while as the sun comes up...

Since it apparently isn't going to blow the face of the mountain off any time soon we make our way back to the room.

"How's the foot...?"

"Looks good. We oughta be able to hike up to the rim of the volcano right after we have some breakfast..." :MakesureDaveisn'tlooking

Eventually we make our way down to breakfast and more importantly, coffee.

The walk is a bit treacherous...

...as this coating of sand-like ash is more like miniature ball bearing. Picture the glass bead used for marking paint in the road.

Interestingly enough, the locals go about the cleanup as if it were a snow storm back home. Sweep, brush, hose off everything top to bottom.

This is gonna be a project.

I'm shocked at how quickly it piles up.

That's just from a ~20' x 20' area.

Stepping through the gate, I glance back towards the hotel...

Across the street I take a look up the valley...

"...nice area..."

Deciding to head downhill back towards town I notice the first sign...

Things we never think about back home.

Scenes along the way...

The streets are covered in ash...

As it turns out it really isn't a great day for a walk. Hotter than the blazes, breathing heavy due to the elevation and seeing everyone on the street wearing a dust mask does cause a little concern.

Nothing of much interest in the radius I'm willing to travel right now, I take my loop back towards the hotel...

...hanging and chilling sounds pretty good today...

It's good to see EvilClown got some exercise that day. I for that matter, did nothing, nada, zero, zilch. At some point the room maid came in...She said she felt very sorry for me, and said I should go to the el medico...I didn't listen. She looked at the room....no hope there either, and brought us some new towels.

Things weren't improving as I had hoped, in the leg department, in fact blood was pooling all around the ankle and it was looking uglier every day. I still wasn't convinced there was anything going on there other than a bad sprain. If conventional wisdom is correct, I shouldn't be able to walk on it if it's broken, right?

We'll just get through this day and night and see what develops...

Oh...yah, I almost forgot... here's a picture of the maid:

It was really nice of her to pose for the picture I thought.

Since Mike was out walking around town, huffing and puffing...I thought it's the least I could do to get a picture for him....

Fixt.

Looks like you've been holding out in us. If i'd known that I mighta gone back and trashed the room more than we already did with our crap just so she could come straighten it out again.

Once again, Dave hobbles down to the dinning room. Guess in retrospect I should have offered to bring food up. Maybe I did. I don't recall.

Where does the time go? Doesn't seem like much of anything has happened today but it's already time for lunch...

...and a beer.

The weather here is constantly changing...

...obscuring the full view of the eruption.

At least the winds have shifted and the trail of ash is headed elsewhere.

We spend the afternoon lounging about, catching up on emails (with no mention of the events so far), soaking up the wi-fi and contemplating our future here in Ecuador.

Another check of the ankle...

...a check to see if getting a boot on is even an option...

Ok. That's good news.

I sense Dave is coming to terms with something.

We make our way poolside to chill...

...and some quiet reflection...

After much consternation a decision is made.

We pull the plug.

In the early morning before sunrise, we got up and tried to get some pictures of the eruptions...As Mike said, we climbed up the waterslide for a better vantage point. Taking pictures of an erupting volcano is kinda like taking pictures of lightning. Timing and equipment is everything. Not having either of those, we still tried.

That's the best I could come up with.

EvilClown may have pulled the plug in his mind at that point, but the actual "plug pulling" for me occurred that night in the middle of the night. (No, that's not a euphemism)

I don't know what time it was... but I woke up, and I was completely soaked with sweat, and my ankle and foot had a sensation of pins and needles all over them. I thought... holy shit I'm losing the circulation in my foot. This can't be good.
So I massaged the foot for awhile and the pins and needles sensation went away, which relieved my mind a bit, but it was at this point that I realized there might be something more going on here.

The next morning I broke the news...Mike didn't even flinch, he was already there. It was all a matter of fact now...just the details were left.

I managed to get a text to whizzerwife and asked her to change our flight to as early as possible on Monday. Today was Sunday morning, we'd ride back to Quito today, spend the night somewhere, and fly out Monday morning. Mike lined up SCS to pick us up at the airport....

We had breakfast, packed up our shite from the room and went out to load the bikes.

I must admit, I was a little concerned about what riding on volcanic ash on the road might be like. I imagined it might be a tad slippery. Normally, this probably wouldn't be too much of a consideration, but now that I had actually acknowledged, out loud, that I was a bit fucked, more than usual, I was a little more sensitized to the possibilities.

Emails and texts are sent. Wives back home help with arrangements. For a small fee we get our flights changed. This later sparks another discussion.

Mixed emotions but thought it was best.

Silver lining: lava flows at night (or in the dark) are really where it's at. Our new plan for an early departure tomorrow will allow this to happen - as long as it isn't overcast first thing in the morning. Skies right now aren't looking too promising...

Our room across the pool area looking out over the water slide...

...we had the upstairs.That's handy.

Must be time to eat again!

Dang, they make a good fish dinner!

Complete with ice cream...

Bellies full, we head back to the room and prepare for tomorrow's journey back to Quito.
