Up before light as planned...

...we check on the volcano. We can see it!

More spectacular than our cameras can begin to capture, we take it in.

After a couple thousand shots that eventually look like crap, we get ready to hit the road.

Gear eventually out to the bikes, the ash swept off of them and we're ready to roll at 6:45 - this must be a record of sorts.

We ease out of the driveway and down the hill to the main road. First stop is gas. Then the search is on for deysayuno.

The road winds around to the downwind side of the volcano...

Epic fail at capturing Dave with the erupting volcano in the background...

"We'll go for the volcano in the mirror shot then..."

More fail.

The road is covered with volcanic ash - some places it's built up on the center line like snow back home.

With every turn there is a new view of the volcano...

It's a bit of a somber ride...

...taking in the sites...

...

...eventually, we find what we're looking for...

...pork products!

"Pretty sure this is the same pig we saw hanging here on our way by a coupla days ago. I'm sure they drag it into the big meat locker every once in a while to rechill it. Don't worry..."

We order up...

...and wait for breakfast.

Fritadas!

For whatever reason we've got it in our heads that it's going to take the better part of a day to make it to Quito. Perhaps it isn't the reaching it that has us concerned - maybe just finding our destination once there...

web photo

A quick look at Google Earth and you can get a feel for how far the city of Quito sprawls.

Regardless, we press on...

As we ride by I wonder about the working conditions in the building to our left...

...we pass another volcano...

...and the tinman...

It doesn't seem it but we're climbing in elevation. The 200's are feeling it but they do ok for the most part - even at highway speeds.

We get closer...

...in the distance we see how far the city spreads...

At some point we decide to top off the tanks. May not be as easy finding a station in the thick of it.

While waiting for Hop-along Whizzerwheel I snap a self portrait...

Guess the ash left a bit of a mark.

While there the gentleman driving the pickup offers to lead us in to our main route...

...we take him up on it.

Things begin to look familiar...

He waves us to our route, we split off and proceed to get lost...

Eventually, we fumble our way to the hotel we arrived at the first night...

...unload the bikes and make our way over to Freedom.

A quick debrief, grab our bags from the storage locker and we make our way back to the hotel...

...perhaps a little dejected...

Bright spot in the day...

...Maria hooks us up with some beers, and gets us officially checked in.

Once settled in we grab a cab in the pouring rain and find some grub...

These things are so good we decide to order a couple more...

...before we make our way back to the hotel where we spend the evening playing cribbage, sipping beers and chatting with the other guests...

We've got another early day tomorrow.

I liked the Brahma beer the best...

Nice job there EC....and you're bringing this to a close just in time for "Mexico or Bust", or is that "Mexico and Busts"

I'm not going to lie. I liked Maria the best.

The Brahmas were a close second, though.

And thank you. Hoping it's the latter.

The roads with ash on them looked as smooth as glass.

For the most part the main roads we traveled on the way back to Quito were in decent shape, as I recall. My notes on the topic pretty much ended with "Road up sucked." Think I meant in comparison to the stuff we had been riding in the more remote areas.

Perhaps Dave has a better memory as he may have been in tune with that. Pain tends to make one more aware of the condition of a road.

Up before dawn, we make the final collection of our stuff. It's not easy getting it all to the front door quietly which helps to alert the desk clerk out of his slumber.

A quick coffee and we pile our bags at the gate before the curb. We'd made arrangements the night before for a taxi. He arrives and we help him load it all into the car before we slip away into the darkness.

Quito takes on a different look in the dark. The cabbie knows all the back roads and takes each and everyone of them. The areas not looking familiar, we get a little nervous with all the ketchup and mustard related heists we've read about but finally rationalize, "who wants a pile of stinking laundry and riding gear?"

Main roads and eventually the airport in sight our rationalizations are confirmed. We're kicked to the curb.

Inside is the typical chaos we've come to expect at an airport in this region. We are careful to make sure we fill out the proper forms after getting into the proper lines. But there is one more very important lesson to learn - Ecuador is 'cash only'. Even at the airport. Even with a world known airline.

Neither of us are in the mood for it. Maybe we really didn't have coffee before leaving the hotel? Regardless, they want $75 - in cash. We want to use a credit card. There's some lame story about the credit card machine being broken. We have a lame story about not having cash. This goes on for a while.

Long story longer we finally break down and dip into the 'travel home' cash stash. I guess times like these are why we have that. Again, neither of us are in the mood for it.

Not wanting to sour the trip, we put it behind us and move on. We find our gate, a comfortable place to wait, breakfast and most importantly, coffee.

Eventually, we board our plane and wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait. And wait...

Apparently, getting out of the new airport can be tricky due to the fog.

After a couple of hours they decide to let everyone off of the plane to stretch our legs, get provisions and use the necessary rooms. We take advantage of this opportunity.

Once back on the plane we take in the irony of the fact that getting on an airline is a relatively casual experience in comparison to the dangers of the ketchup and mustard wielding villains one may encounter on the streets of Ecuador...

After another extended spell it's announced we will be taking off shortly...

Indeed, we do!

Not sure who's head these were designed for...

Once airborne, we are served our final helping of plantain...

...and 'flight coffee'...

...before settling in for a nap...
