Garmin GPS III Plus

There is one of these available for around 75 bucks and the sellers says "Great secondary GPS for tripmeter and voltage. Rugged and waterproof. Perfect for ATV use as well as dual-sport bikes."
Would inmates agree with this? Are maps still available and easy to upload for more backcountry areas?
Thanks,
Asa

If free then a definite maybe, $75 he's dreaming.
Almost 1 year ago I gave away (to a friend) my trusty Garmin V which was the successor to the III Plus.

It will show location, speed, direction OK but the track capabilities are poor by todays standard and only Garmins Roads & Recreation (long discontinued) a suitable map (and then only several counties worth at a time). Also need a serial computer port to transfer maps/data.

Look for a used 60Cx or 76Cx.

Thanks, I would love one of those, but the price seems to be out of my range with all the other stuff I am getting for the bike.

60/76 should be about $100+-.

The III+ will work as good as it did 10-15 years ago. Will not auto-route, only straight line routing.

There is a "Garmin GPSMAP V" on ebay for $80, 2X the GPS but still overpriced IMO. Ask the seller to include a copy of Roads & Recreation.

I sold mine for $50 about 3 or 4 years ago.

They were great technology - a dozen years ago.

They would be considered marginally useful today. Tiny screen. They will definitely record a track, and can show speed and direction, but you will need a serial interface on a computer to download the information, or an adapter to hopefully make it work with USB.

I'd pay the price of shipping, and that's about it.

I checked prices on Ebay about 5 years ago when I switched to a 60cx.

III+s were going for $25, so I kept mine. A big problem was lack of memory for downloading maps.

I used mine for over 5 years and it did what it was supposed to do

I checked ebay in an attempt to fine a better alternative for Asatrur, man some of the pricing for the 60Cx are crazy high (76 as well). Maybe just trolling for suckers.

Even a Quest would be more useful. I paid $15 for one last Winter and it's a capable old school gps which at least has a colour display, is waterproof and has reasonable cradle options.
