Bad battery?

Just this past weekend after a long ride, just for the hell, I plugged in my battery to my (BMW) maintainer. I was surprised when it went into dedulfate mode and stayed there for almost 24 hours before it cycled through to standby.

This battery is 3 1/2 years old and was turning the engine over well. Now that the maintainer no longer runs the defulfate mode, should I keep using this battery or get a new one?

I would watch it, but it may still be fine.

google is your friend

http://www.google.com/#hl=en&gs_rn=1...w=1208&bih=658

it gets complicated fast... for example a regular lead acid battery is 50% depleted @ 12.5 volts and fully charged @ 12.75.
Other types ( AGM absorbed gas mat, liPo, etc) have different values...

this is pretty good info http://www.batterystuff.com/blog/how...ry-is-bad.html

Lead sulfate is the enemy of lead acid batteries. If the charger ran a thorough desulfate cycle and it appears that it did, you may have years more service from the battery. You didn't tell us what battery it is but I'll assume a flooded cell design.

After 3 and 1/2 years...replace the battery. Motorcycle batteries are typically good for 4 - 5 years max. Why worry about a sudden failure when you can spend $80 and eliminate the problem?

that is a good rule of thumb for all lead acid batteries. AGM, Lipo is different

I like that Jim, reminds me of a flight I heard about. The captain got on the horn and said,"We may make it over the ocean"
