trip odometer

If I'm using trip 1 and at some point turn the bike off then restarting should return to trip 1.

Not always the case, sometimes it returns to the total mileage

This is on a new 2012 12GS.

I'm not too worried it's not a big problem and it's under warranty.

Just wondering if anyone else experienced this

IMHO It should not. Most of the time, if that is happening, you have a weak battery connection.

my 2009 does that if I start the engine without letting the display boot fully.

+1 and easily repeatable. If I don't let it finish the cycle I get the main odometer. Otherwise I return to the trip odometer is was on when I shut the bike down.

It's odd that it does it on the new GS and not on the 08' RT under the same conditions

On my RT I tried to make the trip go back to the overall mileage instead of trip 1 by starting the bike before the display boots completely and it always goes back to trip 1.

I believe that is how it is supposed to work.

I could be convinced otherwize if every other GS does the same

Yup, this is it. I always wondered why my trip meter display reset to total KMs. So I tried this today and sure enough if you wait long enough when you turn the key on, the display will revert to what it was set to when you shut it off.

Thanks Marki!!

On my R1200GSA it would do this if I didn't let the check complete.

I guess there is a difference in the 08 RT's and GS computer. Just seems strange that they would change something like that

My 12 GS does not do this. It always goes to the last setting no matter when in the start up cycle I start it. It did do it once or twice but tracked it down to a loose battery conection as I has just installed a fuse block and didnt tighten it down completely. Tighten it and never happened again.

I highly recomend this road!!!! I do not have time to scout out proper directions, but I wil lwhen I get back in 2n1/2 weeks to be sure.

Take care all, I'm going fishing.

It might depend on year and maybe more important if it has the computer or not. Don't know but it seems to be repeatable enough for it not to be a fault.
