Day 19: Hawes to Ilam

End of the tour in sight, as I'm making my way down to join a bunch of friends for the Bank Holiday weekend in Wales.

Blat out of Hawes and off to the Transport Bridge

And to a very impressive hostel for the night in Ilam

Thanks Jim. I'm not using a gopro, rather a micro 4/3rds DSLR with a wide lens on the bike, and an assortment off it. Much grief with dirt on the sensor, and for the last few days have had a malfunction with the shutter - hence the lack of pictures on day 19. Camera will need to go back for repairs :(

Hi Stephen, thanks. I've been staying in official YHA/SYHA hostels - other than one in Orkney which sounded better. There is a website https://www.hihostels.com/ however I picked up a map with their locations marked, which I keep with my road map. This way I could wait until around noon to pick a final destination depending on progress etc. I've only had two nights where they were full.

Great ride report! Will be hoping to tour that area in the summer at the start of a longer tour, and your pictures are the perfect inspiration!

You say you're using a micro 4/3rds DSLR. How has your experience been with this camera? My girlfriend is hoping to film our trip and we're looking into different equipment options....She was thinking about a Canon Mark II, but she thinks it may be a bit bulky.....?

Thanks,

Joel

Thanks Joel. TBH the 4/3rds would be perfect, but teething problems with the camera have made it rather difficult to recommend. Cleaning the sensor is rather hard, and it might not always power on when I ask it to, plus I've had issues with the shutter freezing and ruined photos in certain low light conditions that are well documented problems.

I would agree the Canon would be a bit big for solo work, but if your g/f is operating it then why not? Keep in on a bag on-top the pannier lid or somesuch. It's a proven camera so shouldn't give you the hassle I've had.

Day 20: Ilam to Aberystwyth

I suppose the journey to Wales doesn't really fit into a 'tour of the british north' :) though for the sake of completion, here it is.

I met up with some friends, and toured around Wales for the weekend.

The 990 was now due a service and certainly a new front tyre after this unplanned trip.

The End.
