Totaled 990 Baja rebuild

A few months ago I bought my son's totaled GSA and rebuilt it to have a great bike at a great price.

My buddy just had a friend total his brand new Baja with 200 miles on it. I have yet to see the bike but am looking to buy it as salvage from the Insurance company and rebuild it assuming the frame is good and the price is right.

Does anybody have any tips to offer that knows more about these bikes since I've been a 1200GSA guy with little working knowledge on these beasts.

Easy bike to swap parts

The 950/990 is a fairly easy bike to take apart and reassemble. Almost all the parts can be removed with the stock tool kit. A good metric socket set helps and I think the only weird tool needed is a 12 or 14mm hex key required to remove the rear shock. Got that tool at Harbour freight tools for cheap.

Since the bike has been around for a while and has not chnaged that much there are many good used parts out there so check the flea market for those for your rebuild.

If I were you I would put all the parts in a box and drive up to CJ's summer bikefest / ridefest / fix-it fest. There will be so many guys and gals there with enough knowledge to probably rebuild the daing thing by dinner on the first night so you can get humbled by DieselJo's woods course on the weekend!

Seriously, Pm CJRacer...won't find a nicer guy with 950 / 990 experience.

There's prolly another 30 guys on this site who can help.

This sounds intriguing but I can't find anything on this when I google it. Can u give me a website address?

You can get exploded views of each section/ bodywork and maybe get a MX dvd from KTM twins for the Adventure. It only goes through 2011 but they haven't changed much if at all. Covers all bikes but good pics/explanations on things with wiring diagrams.

Also may want to check the flea market for parts unless you want all new.

My experience with totaled KTM Twins. I've bought two, Adv and S-Duke. The forks almost never bend, even if the frame is bent bad.
Frames are about $1200 and KTM will stamp new numbers for you. Not that hard to swap out if you have them side-by-side and you don't take many breaks.
Swing arm doesn't bend.
Sub frames and fairing brackets bend.
If the Adv gets a hard hit on the crash bars it will break the front engine mount. BAD, big bucks, lots of time, time to scrap it out.
Lots of used parts, the 950 and 990 have many parts interchange.
Some parts are very expensive if you have to buy them new from the dealer.

I'm still waiting on definitive price from the insurance company. My friend says the frame an Swing arm are bent along with all the other usuals when someone makes a quick left in front of you while coming the other way.

Not sure how you bend one of these swingarms when hitting something from the front, but if the frame, swingarm, front wheel, forks, and plastics are wasted it sounds like all you're buying is a low-mileage motor?

It requires a 12mm Allen. That nut is always a PITA! So get a combination wrench and use the box end for a cheater. Or get a pipe to use as a cheater bar

My 950 was just rear ended and I'm going to be rebuilding it soon myself. Trying to source used parts at a reasonable price online.
