Can't get LC8 to come out of gear.

I just did the valve check and , waterpump rebuild. The crankshaft turns with the hex head through the left side.

I re-mounted the clutch slave cylinder (with all spacers and the bracket), but I can't get the countershaft sprocket to spin. I still have the inner clutch cover off. When i press the shifter lever up or down I can not get it to do anything.

Am I missing something stupidly simple or did I mess something up?

Double check the shifter bolt, if it's loose it can do what you're describing.

turn the rear wheel by hand while moving the gear shift lever up/down... it should move into gear.

Ends up the inner clutch cover pushes the gear selector into place, so since the inner clutch cover was off I had to pull left on the shifter lever to get it to change gears.
