Riding a Street Legal 2-stroke in Cali

Hey all...
I'm headed to Baja in November (Right after the race) and our group is starting in San Diego, crossing at Tecate.

I will probably be on my street legal (In Idaho) KTM 2-stroke.

My question is, what is the general consensus of me being able to ride it during that short bit in California? Think the local 5-O will harass me? I'll be in a group of little bikes, all 4-strokes other than myself.

I don't want a cop to decide its not legal and try and impound my bike, even though it will have a valid out of state plate, insurance, M/C Endorsement, etc...

If you and the bike are legal in Idaho, should be OK. There has been talk in the past of bike registered in a different state than the rider causing trouble. Don't think most folks these days even know what a 'smoker is.
Have fun.

N. Idaho, Coeur D Alene. If you come up and have a bike with you, let me know. I'll take you on some awesome single track if you want. Easy to gnarly, scenic to well, scenic.

Thanks for the replies, makes me feel a little better.

That's more like South Canada, eh?
It'll take a while to ride the southern trails first....

Ya what he said,if it and you are current in Idaho and don't live in California it's ok,In the summer I see lotsa Calif licensed 2 strokes, all earlier bikes,There is a guy who buzzes around town on a KX500 with plates, all old enough to be in the system before CARB put the damper on them,I would love to ride to a gas station and whip out the mix oil pour the gas in and roll out.

So long as your license, insurance and plate are all the same state not an issue.

The problem arises when you have an out of state plate with a CA license.

Then it becomes a PITA if you get pulled over etc.

Nah, it all matches. I'm head to toe legit. I'll only be in Cali for a total of about 2 hrs...

You need turn signals and a stop light, a headlight that's on. If you ride sane the coppers are too busy to even pay attention.
I rode a plated gasgas for years, never even stopped, not once.

You should see the smokers at the 2-stroke Festival here, hundreds of them. At noon they fire them all up and rev the piss out of 'em. BIG blue cloud. CARB loves that. Half of them have NV or AZ plates.

Thats for a CA licensed bike.

You need to meet ID standards only... not CA. If you are street legal in ID... you can ride that thing in 50 states. If ID does NOT require signals you do NOT need to install them to ride here.

You know that makes sense, whatever state the bikes plated in is what determines the basic requirements.

This is true, BUT, if he wants to avoid being pulled over all the time just because, he should run the blinkers, etc. I have a plated 250EXC and I put all the junk on it (minus the horn) just so I don't give the P.O. any extra reason to look at me. I've actually been riding it around my town for the last few weeks without a plate at all because I lost it on a trail and I have not yet been stopped. You'd think they'd notice something like that...

^^ Uh, yep.

Cruise Santa Monica with no lights, mirror, horn, loud muffler.... YOU WILL GET PULLED OVER.

If they want to be dicks you get impounded. You don't need anything in Mexico, but try riding one of those up here on city streets.

Just sayin'. I don't think the OP wants any hassle, right? The was the purpse of the post?
