there's a spy under every rock, isn't there?

a track only bike being sold as a track only bike - it's title was probably gone a couple of owners ago, and could have been from being totalled, bought as salvage, and put on the track with race bodywork

or it could be hot

No spy here...but is a little bit odd and I don't think it is stolen. Here is the thing...what if the few owners ago, let's say it was you, show up at my doorstep show up with the title and an officer? In theory, if I provide a good bill of sale...and the previous' owner's bill of sale, I could keep the bike. I suppose it would be a 2500 bet.

Nope. No matter how many times stolen property changes hands, the victim of the theft retains legal title/ownership of the goods. None of the people who accepted or issued a bill of sale had legal right to transfer ownership. You may not be charged with theft, but you will lose the bike and have no recourse for the money you lost, as you can't sue somebody for losses suffered in an illegal transaction.

Even salvage vehicles retain a title....a salvage title.

No title = stolen.

You could buy it and sell it for parts...because really that is all it is really worth and what he is selling it for.

Agreed CJ. It's one thing to not have a title for a dirt bike that is several years old...but to not have a title for a street bike which is fairly new? That is strange.

One thing to disagree on. I called the DMV and they confirmed to me that a bill of sale from me is legal and the owner than can transfer the title without the title in in hand. The catch? The bill of sale had to be notarized. I was almost in a situation where I did not have the title...as it was in the mail from Oregon. However, I did get it and didn't have to go down that road.

They did confirm however that the new "owner" could not sell it until he had the title.

A waste of a previously great bike. At least the paint job on the tank is classy.

Not necessarily stolen, I've done 4-5 bond titles so far and none of them have been stolen.

Or were they...
