To answer a few questions and address a few comments… about this 2008 Suzuki DL650 V-Strom

First, the owner is on this forum ... so if you have any questions about this specific bike feel free to PM me or call 719.494.7560. Or post, I just may not see if for a while...

BTW, I agree with most of the comments made here…

I have been really pleased with this bike for what it is really intended… (I sort of wince when I see it classified as a Dual Sport by Suzuki. Dual Surface Bike? Absolutely. Dual Sport? Should probably be an asterisk after that).

IMHO it is…

GREAT for Sport Touring, Commuting, and Dirt Roads (as in outstanding for a trip to Alaska – miles and miles of smooth dirt/gravel… even loaded up… also great on local County Roads and Forest Roads all over Colorado, etc…) (ie RRR, Gold Camp, Old Stage, Cottonwood, Cumberland, Marshall, Weston, etc…)

OK for mild off-road if you are comfortable on dirt and can be patient and pick your way around most of the rough stuff. (ie Engineer, Cinnamon, California, Corkscrew, etc… very doable... and fun)

Where it quickly becomes challenging is when you run into terrain where it’s all, rough, rocky, sandy, loose etc… or where pure ground clearance becomes an issue. You may be able to do it but it will only be fun in a challenging way and that will wear off quickly… ( ie Mosquito toward the top)

On the Off-Roadable Spectrum I would put it somewhere about here….

SUPER RELIABLE Engine, SUPER EASY to maintain. I change the oil and filter in 10 minutes. No tanks to remove.

SUPER REASONABLE Service Schedule… (from 2008 DL650 Owner’s Manual)
Oil Change at 600, 4000, 7500, 11000, 14500 mi
Oil Filter Change at 600, 11000 mi,
Spark Plug Replacement at 7500, 14500
Valve Clearance Check 14,500 mi (Not sure where the comment about Valve Checks came from – most of the reports I’ve read from riders with Wee’s over 50, 60, 70k mi have reported they didn’t need adjustments even at the regularly scheduled checks.)

SUPER VALUE if the above criteria fit. There is a reason there is such a loyal following.

For $6500 I would also take a well-loved, well equipped (like this one) 950 in a heartbeat IF I could find one without twice the miles. If you have one, let me know. I’m in the market!

Not a show bike but still a nice clean bike and an excellent rider. I've put like 150 miles in it so far...
Alot done to make it reliable and useable. New Throttle cable. Rebuilt Master cyl. front and clean out rear. New Grips. Rebuild f/r Calipers (new rear pads). Rebuild carbs/synch. De-carbon topend and NEW rings (still on standard bore). Rebuild fuel shut-off/new fuel lines (tank looks new inside). New Air Filter. Scrub electrical connections (charges excellent-everything works). New Battery. New Muffler Joints/packing. New Fork seals/oil.
Tune-up items: New transmission oil, plugs, points, timing, synch oil pump and adjust/lube everything.
Price is $4000.00. They sell for $3500.00 to $5500.00 routinely so pass on the lowball offers...

I don't know why but I have some sort of weird fascination with these bikes. I rode one once but the carbs were so out of sorts that I couldn't get a sense of what the bike could do.

Man, what was Yamaha thinking? Not only does it resemble a Power Wheels Harley, but the rear exhaust looks like a real leg burner. Still, the engine looks good, so this may lend itself to a cafe project. Maybe..

I don't think the 80's were a good decade for Yamaha. The Virago has to be one of the ugliest motorcycles ever made (sorry Virago fans).
