With all the Honda's coming up lately, the Yammy's get no respect. Don't know anything about old bikes except this one looks cool.

So dream on my friend. Dream on.
No dreaming Tim, back in their day, the RDs were extremely fast and that included road racing, they "owned" the AMA mid sized amateur classes well into the mid 80s and held titles off an on in some of the larger amateur classes. It was the GSXR of it's day when it came to Road Racing. The RD was a very close copy of the highly successful TD3 (predecessor to the TZ350) Many of the parts are interchangeable. The RDs were about as close to a factory road racing bike as you could buy off a big 4 showroom back then. Eventually it took a 4 cyl mid liter bike and 200 CCs (GPZ 550) to dethroned it. When it came to street racing, you better show up with a Kawasaki triple, Honda 750 or a Z1 if you were up against a good running RD with a decent rider. And no my memory isn't fogged with nostalgia, I had about 6 of 'em and made some good money building them for other riders at the time.

Ok I'll step down off my soap box.

I guess that I'll quit dreaming of the BMW 1000R or the Honda CBR1000 and start dreaming of a 30 year old 2-t 400 for my next really fast ride.

Good idea, you might not be able to handle all the power

My point was they were fast back then, by today's standards, they're nothing and def not the bike for any kind of open road. And yes, third gear wheelies weren't much of a problem.

They were definitely more fun than much faster bikes made today. A well ridden RD will still surprise most anyone on a tight windy mountain road. And to those who have never ridden one, it's you who are missing out, not us.
